Besides the usual coloring and music, I’m adding a hilarious cartoon I found in, The Funny Times, which is a monthly newpaper that has cartoons and humorous political essays; also it contains reports of generally funny and strange actions called human nature. If humans do it, it is human nature, and us humans do some “out there” things. Laughter truly is the best medicine, and The Funny Times has kept me laughing for many years now.
Per wikipedia: Return to Forever is a jazz fusion album by Chick Corea, simultaneously functioning as the debut album by the band of the same name. The album was not released in the USA until 1975. The record is often considered one of the classic albums in electric jazz. At this stage, Corea’s approach to jazz fusion was very different compared to other early fusion artists. Adventurous electric piano solos are backed with South American oriented rhythms of drummer Airto Moreira and the vocals and percussion of his wife Flora Purim. Stanley Clarke is the bassist of the group and Joe Farrell plays flute and saxophone.
The selection from this CD is, “What Game Shall We Play Today”. I chose this one because it is the shortest and because it is so lovely. “Return to Forever” is more like a concept album than cut-by-cut. It is a work of wonder and marvel and I would encourage anyone who likes this song to go out and find the rest of them. The musicianship is superb by everyone. The bass player, Stanley Clarke, is one of the best bass players I’ve ever heard. He brings the bass to life.
Look around you my people
If you look then you will see
How to love, life is paradise all together
What game shall we play today?
Man just wants to be happy
Cast off things that shouldn’t be
Set him free, life is paradise all together
What game shall we play today?
There’s a way you can find it
It’s within you, can’t you see
Find the truth, it’s not impossible all together
What game shall we play today?
Here we are all together
Free to have and do and be
What we see, for the first time all together
What game shall we play today?
Songwriters: Chick Corea / Neville Potter
Stanley Clarke is beyond great…I work with a cousin of his…we have only talked briefly but I’ve always enjoyed his playing.

That’s cool as heck you work with his cousin. His bass playing stands far above any other I’ve heard. Jazz bass gets more respect in the musical world I think.

It does get more respect. I have seen him on late shows just playing bass by himself and it’s entertaining.

Good illustrations ! And cartoon… vaguely reminiscent of ‘The Far Side’… I used to love that strip and had probably half a dozen books of Larson’s comics. Strangely enough just this week I thought, I wouldn’t mind getting one of those again. Do you have any regular favorite comics?

Thanks Dave. I have some of the Larson books also. Matt Groening’s Love is Hell, Life in Hell, etc, are some favorites and have a book of those also. Callahan, who they recently made a movie about, is good even if not always PC. Keith Knight (keef) is exceptionally talented. I don’t read the paper anymore, but every month I get The Funny Times — I would highly recommend it, check out their website! — and have my favorites. Chris Monroe’s “Violet Days” is one I love. Aaron McGruder’s, “The Boondocks” is another. How about you?

Man, yeah I loved “Life in Hell” too! recently, the comics in the newspapers are… rather lacking I find. While still up north I liked “Retail” a lot because it was relateable as I’d worked quite a few years in chain stores.

I will check out “Retail” as I’m always on the lookout for good funnies.
