When I think of cup my first thought is The Holy Grail. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary describes it as, “The Holy Grail is a treasure that serves as an important motif in Arthurian literature. Different traditions describe it as a cup, dish or stone with miraculous powers that provide happiness, eternal youth or sustenance in infinite abundance, often in the custody of the Fisher King. The term “holy grail” is often used to denote an elusive object or goal that is sought after for its great significance.”
I went and did a little more reading on the grail and the fisher king, which is a broad and varied myth/legend/archetype. The rendering of it depends on the culture and the perspective of the reader/believer.
Terry Gilliam, a brilliant director, made a movie years ago, called, The Fisher King, starring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. Watching the following scene now that Robin Williams has passed on, makes the scene particularly poignant.

Three things that will never be found are Noah’s Ark, the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail.

The Holy Grail is a state of mind, and yes it can be found. As to the Ark of the Covenant, you see what happened when the Nazis tried to put it to evil use (in Indiana Jones movie). I thought they did find Noah’s Ark?

No physical proof of the Noah’s ark has ever been found. There is supposed to be a vast system of labyrinths, mazes, secret chambers and corridors underneath the Temple that Solomon built and it is thought that is where the Ark of the Covenant was hidden when the Persians destroyed the Temple. The Holy Grail is the cup that Jesus passed around at the last supper and supposedly Joseph of Arimathea buried it in a well in England.

I Thought the Arc of the Covenant was in Africa brought their by the Queen of Sheba and King David’s son?… though it is so protected and only one priest is ever allowed to actually care for it… I saw that on a Josh Gates ‘Expedition Unknown’ show.
There are other interpretations that Noah’s Arc was actually more of a raft of a trader going down the Nile than a huge ‘boat’ when the Nile flooded…
And the grail… I like that it could be a nondescript simple wooden cup – or better yet something we can all attain no matter what faith we believe, because of the goodness and purity we can emulate if we seek to be better.
Some historical myths can never be fully resolved by science. And perhaps that’s best?

I do love your comment, Jules. History is not my forte and I appreciate the added info. I usually look at them all as archetypes, especially the grail.

No one will ever really know where some history is buried. Some of the Dead Sea scrolls have similar books in the Christian collection of Biblical stories but are not included in the Torah or Jewish texts. And there are other oddities about other scrolls found in those caves too. We must remember though that sometimes even a single kernel of truth can lead to a tome of religious dogma.
