Jim Adams is again hosting for Song Lyric Sunday. Jim is remaining tough when it comes to getting around WP’s technical snarls to make sure we have a place to post our tunes on Sundays, and for that I am grateful.
The theme of the week for Song Lyric Sunday is crying. I wanted to stay with a Pearl Jam theme but instead chose another beloved favorite, who was friends with Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell and Soundgarden. My choice of song today is, “My Wave”, from their 4th studio album, Superunknown (1994). There is not a bad cut on this!
From wikipedia: Superunknown was a critical and commercial success and became the band’s breakthrough album. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 310,000 copies in its opening week and reached high positions on charts worldwide. Five singles were released from the album: “The Day I Tried to Live”, “My Wave”, “Fell on Black Days”, “Spoonman”, and “Black Hole Sun”, the latter two of which won Grammy Awards and helped Soundgarden reach mainstream popularity. In 1995, the album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. The album has been certified five times platinum by the RIAA in the United States, has sold 9 million copies worldwide and remains Soundgarden’s most successful album.
I first started listening to Soundgarden upon my oldest son’s recommendation way back when and bought “Superunknown”. The music and lyrics immediately impressed, as well as the voice of Chris Cornell. I love the message of this song, as he sings about letting people be who they are without harassment.
Most people know that Chris passed away on 5/18/17. Chris, I miss you.
My Wave
Take, if you want a slice
If you want a piece
If it feels right
Break, if you like the sound
If it gets you up
If it takes you down
Share, if it makes you sleep
If it sets you free
If it helps you breathe
Don’t come over here
Piss on my gate
Save it just keep it off my wave
Cry, if you want to cry
If it helps you see
If it clears your eyes
Hate, if you want to hate
If it keeps you safe
If it makes you brave
Pray, if you want to pray
If you like to kneel
If you like to lay
Don’t come over here
Piss on my gate
Save it just keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave, my wave
Keep it off my wave, my wave
Cry, if you want to cry
If it helps you see
If it clears your eyes
Hate, if you want to hate
If it keeps you safe
If it makes you brave
Take, if you want a slice
If you want a piece
If it feels alright
Don’t come over here
And piss on my gate
Save it just keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave, my wave
Keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave, my wave
Keep it off my wave
Keep it off my wave, my wave

After hearing Black Hole Sun I had to go get the album and I loved not only the song but the album– and I also have their greatest hits. All good stuff.

I didn’t know they had a greatest hits. I have Superunknown and Down on the Upside, which is also excellent. When Chris went on to form Audioslave I bought the first one. Not all songs are great on it but there are a few.
