Anmol is the host of dVerse today. Anmol says:
[T]oday, I am asking you all to reimagine the myths and the legends that you have grown up with, through the perusal of classic literature or local lore. Think of the characters involved and the plot-lines and break them apart and think about them again — make them more fantastical or perhaps more humane with the mundane narrative of daily life — do as you must or based on where the muse carries you, and write a poem about the same.

“Pandora’s Box” by Anne Skyvington
My first thought was Pandora and how to fashion her for modern times. I also had to refresh my memory on the Pandora story and followed the plotline from Greek Myths and Greek Mythology.
Votes are in, and soon-to-be
POTUS Pandora wins!
One big party
With one belle of the ball.
In celebration across the land
relieved bells chime,
Heralding a savior from
Enduring 30 years in Cheeto’s dungeon.
Her perfectly contoured body was
Poured into a perfectly accessorized outfit.
She had skillz that could charm
The wrinkles off of a diseased prune.
A conversational barracuda she was,
Especially when surrounded by chum.
Her throne was constructed
and upheld by The Supremes.
Her only shadow – and what a shadow! – was
a suggestion for Bilderberg guidance.
(The Bilderbergs had their doubts but played along.)
First day in the oval, Pandora booted the Bs
And set a placemat at the table for Green,
Which sparked a chain reaction
That set a zillion blazes world-wide.
World War III put Mother Gaia to sleep.

LOL She had skillz that could charm
The wrinkles off of a diseased prune.
Very well written. :-)

I love the poem and the word choices are excellent. but I am missing something. I don’t know who it is about? I’m not up on world events at all so I am sure it is my fault I don’t know.. But I would love to….

I took the tale of Pandora, who, according to the myth, was the first woman the Gods created. I modernized it to “the Gods” as in the patriarchy who controls everything, allowing the first woman to become president. She exists only in my imagination. It’s a kind of what-if, where “the box” is being in control as the POTUS.

Ok. Cuz I got the POTUS part and it definitely wasn’t about Hillary so I was curious.. Thank you so much for the prompt reply.

Congrats–you know me, I wanted to rework a myth into including the perils of Trumpland. I couldn’t come up with anything; kudos to you for succeeding.

I thought you were referring to that con-artist Sarah Palin, and then I got really depressed. Still, a well-written satire on our sad state.

Thank you, Barry. I’m hoping we get someone other than a Pandora in office as we have had quite enough of the one in the oval right now.

Ooh! Pandora was meant to be the harbinger of the ills in the world, a kind of a dummy representative and curse-bearer by the Olympians — reworking it in the context of contemporary politics is an excellent choice. I love how the myth works out so well in this tale. Now, I wonder what would happen if Pandora would snatch and exercise her own agency. :-)

Anmol, thank you very much for your feedback, your prompt made the poem possible. In this tale, Pandora rejects the “advice” of the Bilderbergs, who are reputed to be the ones who call the shots for the planet (boots the Bs) and sets a placemat for the Greens (environmentalists) at the table for helping her rule. Because the forces of evil are so strong across the globe and because the greenies are empowered, there is a great civil war, as in light forces (greenies) vs dark (maniac variety pack), and in the process the planet is destroyed. I’d like to turn it into a fairy tale where there’s a happy ending, but I don’t see it at this point.

I felt a bit like it was bad, but it could always be worse… she sounds sinister enough to seal our fates.

Her intent was good, but the world wasn’t able to handle the change and so imploded :(

That would be some dream as reality, a whole new world!

It would depend on how one interprets “puts Mother Gaia sleep.” Maybe she wakes up after humans are gone and it’s a new world, or maybe she doesn’t wake up. I hope the former.

Yes, the former, we are the killers.
