“Smashing Young Man” is off of Collective Soul’s, ” Collective Soul” album, released in March 1995. There’s not a bad track on this whole album. It’s got great arrangements, lyrics, and vocals. What more do you need? Not sure why it’s been awhile since listening to this, but when it first came out I played it over and over again.
The album, Collective Soul (sometimes referred to as the Blue Album to differentiate from the second self-titled album) is the second studio album by Collective Soul. It became the band’s highest selling album to date, going Triple-Platinum, and spent 76 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts.
From songfacts.com:
When Collective Soul took off in 1994 with their song “Shine,” Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins slagged them off, calling their frontman Ed Roland a “shameless rip-off artist.” Corgan was referring to similarities between “Shine” and Smashing Pumpkins songs like “Rhinoceros,” “Drown” and “Snail.” On this track, Roland fires back, never mentioning Corgan by name but calling this Smashing Young Man “synthetic-like,” and saying he lives in a “self-lit spotlight.”
Roland’s guitar riff on “Shine” dates back to 1989, pre-dating the Smashing Pumpkins songs he was accused of stealing.

The pic looks great. I like that song and I remember them in the 90s along with Everclear and a few others.

Thanks Max. It’s the first pic out of the mandala book. I’ve got two of their CDs and the music is dependably good. It’s my understanding they are still performing.

They were consistent. I didn’t know they were still together…but I have to admit I don’t listen to the radio as much now.
