Pretenders is the debut studio album by British-American band The Pretenders, released on 7 January 1980 under Real Records in the UK, and Sire Records in the United States. A combination of rock, punk and pop music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles “Stop Your Sobbing”, “Kid” and “Brass in Pocket”.
Nick Lowe produced the Pretenders’ first single, “Stop Your Sobbing”, but decided not to work with them again as he thought the band was “not going anywhere.” “Stop Your Sobbing” is a song written by Ray Davies for the Kinks’ debut album, Kinks. The recording of this cover of the song led to the relationship between Ray Davies and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, which eventually resulted in the birth of a child.
Now here is The Kinks version:
It is time for you to stop all of your sobbing
Yes it’s time for you to stop all of your sobbing oh oh oh
There’s one thing you gotta do
To make me still want you
Gotta stop sobbing now
Yeah yeah stop it stop it
It is time for you to laugh instead of crying
Yes it’s time for you to laugh so keep on trying oh oh oh
There’s one thing you gotta do
To make me still want you
Gotta stop sobbing now
Yeah yeah stop it stop it
Each little tear that falls from your eyes
Makes, makes me want
To take you in my arms and tell you
To stop all your sobbing
There’s one thing you gotta do
To make me still want you
And there’s one thing you gotta know
To make me want you so
Gotta stop sobbing now
Yeah yeah stop, stop, stop, stop
Gotta stop sobbing at all
Stop, stop, stop, stop
Gotta stop sobbing at all
Stop, stop, stop, stop
Gotta stop sobbing at all
Stop, stop, stop, stop
Stop, stop, stop sobbing
Stop, stop, stop, stop
Gotta stop sobbing
Stop, stop, stop, stop
Gotta stop sobbing at all
Stop, stop, stop, stop
Gotta stop sobbing at all

Thank you, Max, it took awhile to do it. I like both versions also, each has their charm. Isn’t it cool to think Ray and Chryssie got together over this song?

Yes it is…they seemed perfect for each other…but I guess not in the end.

Hynde is a real battler, I’m surprised she hung in there at all given the knockbacks she suffered for over ten years, a great achievement. You’ve redeemed rats by beautifying them.

What knockbacks did she suffer? I’m glad she toughed out her hardships. After “Night of the Rat,” I had to balance the cosmos with this cutey ;)

She was asked to leave a couple of bands, one manager didn’t believe in her and strung her along, she got knocked back in recording, and she just kept going.

I’ve always liked both versions of the song. Thanks for the reminder.
It’s interesting how an intricate design can add such life to what would be a lifeless drawing without it, and your color adds even more.
