It’s been in the 80’s all week, which means too hot to do much outside for most of the day. I just went and got the mail out of the box, deadheaded the hanging basket of petunias and verbenas the kids got me for my birthday — yes, I just had a birthday, yay — and went to cut down a few thistle-like picker plants in the yard. There was a small garter snake laying stretched out on one, which seems like it would hurt, but when I tried to take a pic it made itself scarce. I did cut the thistle plant down after it left. Very brief tour of what else is growing in the yard.

These are either yellow squash or a kind of zucchini. In either case they are going to town. This is one plant of 3 or 4 from the heirloom seed bank at the library. This is going to save me money!

A sunflower seed that sprouted and grew on its own from the seeds in the bird feeder.

This is ONE tomato plant of the two I bought from the store. This thing is a monster and so is the other one. So far no signs of those hornworms, thank goodness.

The tomato blossoms grow facing down, so it’s tricky to get a good shot of them.

Another shot of the tomato blossoms. No tomatoes in sight yet.

One of the two pepper plants I bought. They are doing ok and both have blossoms on them.

The border geranium plants are looking better every day.

Chamomile grows wild here. These sprouted up in a crack in the driveway.

The lilies just keep getting taller and taller, but they look nowhere near blooming. The deer nibbled on the tops of the same set they nibbled on before (not shown here) but didn’t touch the other two groupings.

No idea why this turned out so dark in a sunny location, but this is wild yarrow growing.

Look at this lovely pot of echinacea/coneflower. Not sure where I’m planting them yet.

You have some beautiful flowers. Happy Birthday Li.

Now I have. What are you planting?

We’re planting a whole lot of nothing! lol A neighbor gave us those sickly looking begonias. Most likely they will spend their final days on that bench, withering away to nothing.

The plants do seem to like this hot steamy weather. You are going to have some great meals in a month or two! (K)

Yes they do and yes I will. I’m posting pictures later today or tomorrow from the garden show tour I just got back from. Only 8 gardens but it’s 88F out there right now and am feeling wilted…

Well, Happy Birthday! Hope your day was fabulous!
Beautiful photos of your plants. I think the one of the lily leaves look 3D … very cool.
Our birds outside scatter seeds everywhere and I like seeing what comes up if they don’t get mowed down too soon. I’ve even planted a bunch of seeds in pots before. The sunflower seeds grow really good. :)

Thanks, Barbara :) There are so many sunflower seeds sprouted around where the chipmunks and squirrels buried them.
