Sept 21

While coloring last night, I decided to listen to Pandora Radio, set on Jam Bands station. I’m not sure if that is a Pandora-made channel or one I created, but dang, it has some good music on it. I heard The Allman Brothers, Pearl Jam, The Grateful Dead, and…. this band!

Widespread Panic is an American rock band from Athens, Georgia. The current lineup includes guitarist/singer John Bell, bassist Dave Schools, drummer Duane Trucks, percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz, keyboardist John “JoJo” Hermann, and guitarist Jimmy Herring. The band’s original guitarist and primary song-writer, Michael Houser, died of pancreatic cancer in 2002. And the original drummer, Todd Nance, left in 2016.

The band was formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1986, and is influenced by the Southern rock, blues-rock, progressive rock, funk and hard rock genres. They have been compared to other jam bands such as the Grateful Dead and Phish. Widely renowned for their live performances, as of 2018, they hold the record for number of sold-out performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre (Morrison, Colorado) at 60 and State Farm Arena (Atlanta) at 20.

Night of Joy is the fourth live album released by the Athens, GA based band Widespread Panic. The album was recorded during a show in 2003 at the House of Blues in South Carolina. It was released on March 23, 2004 and features the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The album reached a peak position of #157 on both the Billboard 200 chart and the Top Internet Albums chart.

The song I picked, Bust it Big, is the only song I heard from the album so it is unknown what else is on it. It’s a long song, so you may want to stop before the end, but I think it remains viable pretty well all of the way through.  With the kickass guitar and the drums, it reminds me of how Santana used to jam.  There is a very good 13 minute plus youtube live out there also.

I like the way you move in your blue stiletto shoes
I like the way you feel on my jet black rug
Just one little kiss before I go, before I go
You’re the one who taught me everything I know
I like the way you look out of breath
I like the way you look shooting pool
When I am in Rome, I don’t do like the Romans do
You’re the one who taught me everything I know
Gonna bust it big, gonna write my ticket
Gonna call my shots
And ride my liquor down to Mexico
Well, Rosemary’s baby is a New York City kid
I said Rosemary’s baby is a New York City kid
Beware of the man who builds monuments to himself
You’re the one who taught me everything I know
Gonna bust it big, gonna write my ticket
Gonna call my shots and ride my liquor down to Mexico
Gonna bust it big, gonna write my ticket
Gonna call my shots and ride my liquor down to Mexico
Bust it big, write my ticket
Gonna call my shots
Bust it big, write my ticket
Gonna call my shots
Gonna bust it big, gonna write my ticket
Gonna call my shots and ride
Gonna bust it big, gonna write my ticket
Gonna call my shots and ride my liquor
Gonna bust it big, gonna write my ticket
Gonna call my shots and ride my

  1. With those lyrics, “blue stiletto shoes”, you could use this song for SLS where the prompt is Clothing/Hat/Pants/Scarf/Shirt/Shoes/Tie. I liked the song a lot especially the jamming parts.

Jim, I *knew* you would like this one. They do remind me of the GD also. I will try to remember this one when the prompt happens :)
