One of the best songwriting duos of all time, Bacharach and David.
“Anyone Who Had a Heart” is a song written by Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics) for Dionne Warwick in 1963. In January 1964, Warwick’s original recording hit the Top Ten in the United States, Canada, Spain, Netherlands, South Africa, Belgium and Australia.
In the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and New Zealand, Warwick’s recording lost out to a cover version by Cilla Black. Black’s version was a UK number-one hit for three weeks in February/March 1964 and was also the fourth best-selling single of 1964 in the UK, with sales of around 950,000 copies.
Petula Clark also recorded “Anyone Who Had a Heart” in several foreign language versions for the international market. Clark reached no. 7 in France with “Ceux Qui Ont Un Coeur” in the spring of 1964, then no. 5 in Italy with “Quelli che hanno un cuore”1 that September. In October 1964, Clark reached no. 1 in Spain – for a two-week period – with “Tú no tienes corazón.”
I’ve only heard the Dionne Warwick version, but now I need to hear the Cilla Black and Petula Clark versions.
Petula Clark in French
Anyone who ever loved could look at me
And know that I love you
Anyone who ever dreamed could look at me
And know I dream of you
Knowing I love you so
Anyone who had a heart
Would take me in his arms and love me, too
You couldn’t really have a heart and hurt me
Like you hurt me and be so untrue
What am I to do
Every time you go away, I always say
This time it’s goodbye, dear
Loving you the way I do
I take you back, without you I’d die dear
Knowing I love you so
Anyone who had a heart
Would take me in his arms and love me, too
You couldn’t really have a heart and hurt me
Like you hurt me and be so untrue
What am I to do
Knowing I love you so
Anyone who had a heart
Would take me in his arms and love me, too
You couldn’t really have a heart and hurt me
Like you hurt me and be so untrue
Anyone who had a heart would love me too
Anyone who had a heart would take me
In his arms and always love me too
Why won’t you
Anyone who had a heart
Would love me too, yeah
Anyone who had a heart
Would take me in his arms and always love me
Why won’t you, yes
Anyone who had a heart
Would love me too
Songwriters: Burt Bacharach / Hal David

That Pet Clark version is wonderful. Reminds me why French is such a beautiful language.
I vaguely remember the original was by Warwick, but had only heard Cilla Black before. She had several connections with the Beatles and several other UK hits.

Thanks for the comment. In my research I see that they have done a biopic on Cilla. Something I think would be good to see now.

There was something on tv here a while back, kind-of a miniseries. About three episodes, couple hours each. I suppose that was biopic. If you get the change, that is worth a watch.

Dionne can sing for me anytime. She was part of the soundtrack of my growing up. (K)

Same here. I had a Burt Bacharach album with all of the best songs with the best singers. This was one of them. Jerry Butler singing was another one.

Bacharach inspired many a good performance with his songs.

Did you see there is a biopic on her? Not sure when it was made…

I’ve never seen it but I would like to….I’ve read about her in Beatle books.

Stroke Survivor said it was a mini-series on British TV.

I have seen a little of it…I would like to see it. I always liked her voice and she was cute. She was really close to the Beatles and to Epstein.

Now I want to see it even more!

Epstein thought the world of her. She was even produced by George Martin. I want to see it also.

Great selection- I have always thought Hal David didn’t get enough credit- he wrote the words to so many of the Bacharach songs- but Bacharach is the one you always hear about- not to take anything from him. Great songwriting team.

I don’t know why that happens so often, where just one gets the focus but they are a team. Like with Cream in those BBC sessions, the only one of the 3 that got interviewed was Clapton, but all 3 of these guys were magnificent musicians.
