#FF — Just Like Old Times

PHOTO PROMPT © Rowena Curtin

We met in fifth grade, when my family moved to Pleasantry. We were neighbors and best friends into high school. I always had his ear to share my secret shame.

At seventeen I hitchhiked away. By forty, I was disappeared into a bottle, living in a boarding house.

I don’t know how, but he found me. His letter contained an invitation and a bus ticket.

Wearing a new outfit from Goodwill, I stepped off the Greyhound in Pleasantry and walked the few blocks to his place. Sitting on the back patio, I talked and he listened, just like old times.

Facebook served me up the story behind “Hello Darkness, my old friend” this morning and your story reminds me of it. The safety and support of time with an old friend really are unrivaled in this life. i hope this is the beginning of a happier phase in the narrator’s life.

It’s incredible how there are those people with whom we click so well that the passage of time, no matter how long, can’t create a disconnect. We can just pick up like no time has passed.
