Mourning at the Cemetery by Robert C. George

countless veils grieve cold, still ashes
endless tears in an ocean of graves
where mighty trees are receptacles
of innocence and early endings; and
testaments to memory-entrenched egos,
of iron wills that will not bend; to death

There is so much sadness on Earth right now. Your poem and the beautiful photo of the statue speak to that with compassion.

You had me with “countless veils grieve cold”… a lot of great lines in that and I love the picture…it goes with it so well.

Thank you very much, Max. I listened to NPR the other day with journalists on the ground in Gaza and it is haunting me.

  4. Cemeteries can be strange places ranging from spooky to peaceful. I guess it also depends on the time of the day you visit.

Oh, I know what you mean, Christian. Friendly and peaceful during the day, but any other time… Have you heard about the big party they have at Houdini’s grave in NYC I think it is on Halloween? I would LOVE to check that out sometime (on my bucket list.)

      1. I haven’t. Since I’m not into Halloween, it probably wouldn’t be my cup of tea. But, hey, New York City ain’t Hawaii or some other distant, not-so-easy-to-reach destination. As such, it sounds like an achievable bucket list goal! :-)

  5. Very pertinent to the current state of affairs… “mighty trees are receptacles
of innocence and early endings; ” – sad.

Brilliant contrast between the trees which gather innocence in their bows and cold iron statuary gripped down by the egos they signify.

Brendan never even considered the cold iron of the statue, but you’re spot on. Thank you for what you see in it.
