Doodads — Ant Project, witch hazel, etc.

DOODADS BANNER 2 (2)

All of the logs that have been lying under the apple trees have been debarked, moved by dolly, dried out, and are now stacked in the carport.  I’m proud of myself for getting that part done.  The bark is here and there.  After letting bugs skeedaddle from one pile I put it in a growing pothole by the mailbox so it went to good use.  Part is in a pile in the carport drying out.  The rest is still under the trees.  That project may have to wait until spring unless we get another nice day or two.

Seeing no more logs under the trees is sweet relief for me.

The witch hazel shrubs keep getting nibbled by the deer and that is ticking me off as there are so many other things they could eat!  I put tomato cages by 3 and they are working but have blown over a couple of times.  I ordered some metal, bendable mesh and it arrived today.  Too short and not wide enough, I combined 2 with the included zip ties, and put one on top for the taller ones.  There are “U” metal pins to ground them from blowing over.  Of course I ran out and there are 3 left unprotected.  I do think there is a roll of chicken wire in the garage that I can probably cut and use the zip ties and rest of the U anchors.

One thing I did notice on a couple of the witch hazel are flower buds!  Can’t wait to see them open!  FYI, bright yellow leaves are their fall color.

The euonymous shrubs were out front when I moved here.  I took a sprig that sprouted from it and transplanted it over to near the driveway.  I love this shade of red.

You just taught me something today. Euonymous is otherwise known as burning bush! Thanks, Christine!

      1. I had one when I lived up in CT. They are really pretty especially when everything else is turning brown around it!

Sadje, some they leave alone like the burning bush but others like witch hazel must taste good to them. Thanks for the wishes :)

Heck yes, I have! Slow and steady wins the race. A little bit then rest, repeat. I’ve moved so much clutter from the house and yard into the garage also. Am tired of running into things with the snowblower in winter lol

It does, Max! Once I can get them split and have a little work done on the woodburner I can heat with them :)

Figuring out I could use the dolly to move them made all of the difference.

Are the logs for burning or an art project? I have a few large ones I’m saving for carving, but now they have a fungi and a bug population, so it will be spring. Getting cold in this part of Texas starting today, so winter is coming early this year, imagine that? Pesky Deer, they will eat anything. My friend, Bwana is available if you need his services.

I wish I could turn logs into art. They will be burnt at some point (or sold to people headed to the state park in the summer.) What do you make and how do you carve logs into art? I’ve seen people do it with chainsaws and that’s about it. I bet you’re glad to feel cold in TX. Fall is still in full swing here. Not sure about the Bwana reference but sounds kind of like a genie in a lamp?

I use an offset Makita grinder with a wood grinding pad, also a saws-all. I’m afraid of chain saws and leather mask.

Very satisfying! But I hope you manage to deter the deer from the witch hazel. (K)
