Open
Shopping sales Boxing Day
blinders fall, turn to see
homeless who look like me;
smile, ask to tea.

Will
New Year’s Eve closes year
reborn babe upon dawn
blank slate potential yawns
with will to good.

Warm
Long cold walk around lake
How do the birds stay warm?
Wings touching, safe from harm.
My hot drink: Cheers!

Colleen Chesebro is the host of TankaTuesday. Colleen says write 3 Abhanga poems using the given kigo.
#1: “Boxing Day” (3 syllables)
#2: “New Year’s Eve” (3 syllables)
#3: “hot drinks” (2 syllables)

nicely succinct!

Thanks, Randy. The form is 6-6-6-4 with lines 2&3 rhyming. It’s further constrained by the kigo (seasonal words) so it has to be. Glad you enjoyed the poems :)

Thanks, Max. I watched a really sad movie the other night, called, “Shelter” and it came to mind for the first one.

I saw a documentary on some California town…San Francisco? They had a few streets where it was so crowded with homeless people with drug problems…so sad.

Was it about 45 minutes long? If so, I think I saw it. I don’t know how low-income people can continue to survive. I’m not condoning drug abuse in any way, shape, or form, but being homeless has to be depressing and escaping through drugs has got to bring momentary relief. I do think many of the homeless have mental health issues that interfere with getting a job, keeping a job, assimilating into a high pressure culture, etc. It’s a mess that the government only plays at trying to remedy :(

I’m not sure if it was the same…but in this one it showed San Francisco full of them and then some China leaders were coming to visit during APEC week…guess what? All the homeless vanished everywhere they could be seen…Reporters found them out of sight on different streets and a winter shelter.

The one I saw was on netflix. No surprises that the “leaders” try to hide their “dirty little secrets” when visitors come to visit. I don’t have many answers, but I’m appalled. I remember going to Cedar Point years ago and taking a turn just a few blocks off the main drag and the homes people were living in (Cedar Point and service support people for businesses around it) were literally shacks.

Oh…Lisa the mayor admitted it. He said that when people come over your house you clean it up… right! Comparing people with dirt. Why are we trying to clean up for the China’s leader? Anyway…I know there are no easy answers but once they started to cart them around…they need to find something permanent.

I’ve never heard of an Abhanga poem, but this was great introduction. A lot said in so little. I enjoyed this.

Lisa,
Your trio of poems is a delightful journey through diverse emotions. The way you seamlessly transition from empathy to hope and end with a cozy moment by the lake is simply heartwarming. A beautiful read!
