Mixed Music Bag Week 44 — Goode’s Field Road by Drive-By Truckers

Brighter_than_creations_dark

I first came across Drive-By Truckers on the myspace.com platform that used to have so much good new music. Facebook knocked it out of commission, which ironically is not known for new music. I bought this album after listening to a few of the tracks and have never regretted it.

From wikipedia:
Drive-By Truckers are an American rock band based in Athens, Georgia. Two of five current members (Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley) are originally from The Shoals region of northern Alabama and met as roommates at the University of North Alabama. The group also has roots in Richmond, Virginia.

The band currently consists of Mike Cooley (lead vocals, guitar, banjo), Patterson Hood (lead vocals, guitar), Brad Morgan (drums), Jay Gonzalez (keys, guitar, accordion, backing vocals), and Matt Patton (bass guitar, backing vocals). The line-up has undergone multiple changes since the band’s formation, with Cooley and Hood serving as the sole constants throughout. The band’s constant touring has developed a dedicated following.

Brighter Than Creation’s Dark is their seventh studio album and was released on January 22, 2008. At the time the band lineup was: Mike Cooley (guitar, vocals,) Patterson Hood (guitar, vocals,) John Neff (pedal steel, guitar,) Brad Morgan (drums,) Shonna Tucker (bass, vocals,) and Spooner Oldham (piano, organ, Wurlitzer.) There are a whopping 19 tracks on this album. It’s been awhile since listening to the album, but the standouts for me when it on the turntable a lot are, “3 Dimes Down,” “I’m Sorry Huston,” “Home Field Advantage,” “That Man I Shot,” and this one.

The stories these songs tell are the stories of everyman. A man protecting his family, love and heartbreak, players in love, soldiers trauma, drug addiction, and more. The music is raw and wanders in cohesion in a very pleasant way.

Honey, take care of the children
Make them do as they’re told
I got a meeting in the morning
Down at the end of the Goode’s Field Road

Nothing much for a man in my position
A man like me won’t last too long in prison
And all them friends down at Police Department
Will act like they never had anything to do with me

I started out down at the junkyard
Taking orders from a moron
And a man my size don’t like taking orders from anyone

And I bought myself an old beat up wrecker
And built an empire with my labor, brains and sweat
But it’s hard to make an honest living
And a man takes any help he gets

Nothing much for a man in my position
A second mortgage and three college kids’ tuition
And all them friends that I helped along the way
Will act like they never had anything to do with me
Will act like they never had anything to do with me

But you and me, we had us some good times
And I’ve always been a family man deep down
Ain’t much a believer for hired work from out of state
But they’ll be asking questions when I’m found
They’ll be asking questions when I’m found

Honey, take care of the children
Pay the house off when the salvage yard gets sold
And you don’t know nothing when the insurance men ask questions
‘Bout what went down at the Goode’s Field Road

‘Bout what went down, ’bout what went down
‘Bout what went down at the Goode’s Field Road

Songwriter:  Patterson David Hood

Glyn is the host of Mixed Bag.  This week is a band beginning with letter “D.”

  1. Thanks for the reminder of Drive-By Truckers. I featured them in one of my Sunday Six posts in April 2022 and liked what I heard at the time. Then, an all-too-common plot played out: it was on to other music and I cheerfully forgot about the Southern rockers. Before that happens again, I’m going to earmark the group as a reminder for another Sunday Six! :-)

My pleasure on the reminder. This music and the stories about as real as it gets. Glad you’ll possibly add them to another Sunday Six :)

      1. I’ve taken the first step, which is writing their name down on my Sunday Six list, which includes all picks to date and others for consideration! :-)

Cool! I am listening to spotify more and listened to “Release Radar” the other day and came across some really good music. I might start doing a new music feature based on what I’m hearing, not sure yet.

I’ve heard of Drive By Truckers but I haven’t listened to a lot of their material. My ‘to do’ music list is getting longer. Spooner Oldham is the name I recognised in the band. He played on several Neil Young albums.

I understand about the ‘to do’ music list, Glyn. lol. Good to know about Spooner! Shonna Tucker sings lead on some of the songs. Was sad to see she isn’t with them anymore.

I like these guys…Hans turned me onto them a while back. They made some concept albums. I like this one…it has a little of Springsteen in the lyrics.

When I first heard the name…I have to admit…I thought it was a country group and then Hans had me listen to some…yea I like them a lot.

  5. I loved the lyrics. Thank you for introducing them to me. This is the wonderful thing about WP. You end up learning new things and discovering new music. They remind me a little of The Black Keys and Alabama Shakes.

Their lyrics are always powerful in one way or another. I agree with who they sound like. They remind me a little of Steve Earle also.

              Here’s a short answer:
“So, is Myspace dead? The answer is yes and no. While the platform is no longer the powerhouse it once was, and many of its original users have moved on, Myspace still exists in a different form. In 2019, the website received over 15 million visits, mostly from users who are interested in music and entertainment. Myspace has also become a destination for niche communities and subcultures, such as indie bands and electronic music enthusiasts, who use the platform to connect with like-minded people and share their work.” The above came from this website, which gives more info:
