Friday Favorite Feature 21 — “No Words” (cover) by Popdudes

popdudes 2

Sorry for another late posting but it’s still Friday here.  Will try to do better next week.  While listening to this week’s Spotify Release Radar (from now on abbreviated to SRR) this tune struck me as very pointedly Beatlesesque.

Popdudes is the long-running power pop inspired side-project for music scribe, John M. Borack and Mike Simmons, leader of Sparkle*Jets U.K. Over the years, they’ve appeared on countless compilations and been recording furiously. Members of the band are listed as Addison Love, John Borack, and Michael Simmons.

They’ve released one album, Maximum Rock Stupidity, in 2018 and 3 singles:
Chains (2019)
Ridin’ in My Car (2020)
O-o-h Child (2020)
The Denny Laine EP, released 12/22/23, has 5 cuts on it.

I’m not sure if they are trying to ride on the coat tails of The Beatles or if it’s a cheap imitation. Whatever it is, I kinda like it.  Further investigation reveals that this is a cover of Paul McCartney, Denny Laine, and Wings’ song from their, “Band on the Run” album.  Am I behind the times or what?  This is my second flub of the week after the Coldplay debacle!  lol

No Words” is from The Denny Laine EP and is the first cut on it.

You want to give your love away
And end up giving nothing
I’m not surprised, that your black eyes are gazing

You say that love is everything
And what we need the most of
I wish you knew, that’s just how true my love was

No words for my love
You’re burning love, sweet burning love
It’s deep inside,
You mustn’t hide, your burning love
Sweet burning love, your burning love

You want to turn your head away
And someone’s thinking of you
I wish you’d see, it’s only me, I love you

No words for my love
Songwriters:  Paul McCartney and Denny Laine.

Of course I had to look up Sparkle*Jets U.K. and found:

Garnering their name from the Gretsch guitars they promised to buy themselves when they “made it”, along with a perfect example of their wacky humor (attaching the oh-so-eighties “u.k.” tag) they set out from Orange County to make their mark on the Los Angeles pop hotbed. They released their critically acclaimed debut “In, Through, and Beyond” at the end of 1998, and it wasn’t long until they were flavor of the month among pop stalwarts across the nation, playing knockout shows at crowded clubs and major pop festivals. Their new-found alliances paid off in their 2000 release of a coup-de-gras tribute album to themselves featuring 20 other bands. Members are listed as: James DeBeau, Jamie Knight (4), Michael Simmons, Robbie Rist, Sue West, and Tisha Boonyawatana. Their discography includes 4 albums and 2 singles.

Info gleaned from discogs.

I found this quirky YouTube video that sounds soooo familiar but yet different.  Check it out and let me know what you think of this old/new music.

  1. I think the Popdudes sound pretty good. The entire EP includes covers of Wings songs that Denny Laine wrote and/or sang. Since Laine passed away in early December, I guess this EP is some sort of tribute to him.

I think you’re right, Christian. Sometimes I’m a little slow on the uptake :)

      1. Don’t feel bad, I didn’t recognize the majority of the song titles and had to look them up!

Lisa I spend more time on cover songs than most every person on the planet and I miss stuff all the time so don’t feel bad.

I was saddened to hear that Denny Laine had passed away recently. I do like the Sparkle Jets EP track.

I do too, and that one also sounds sorta like “Jet” in parts!

I now know – amazing – I guess there’s so much out there – so it is great to be given opportunity to know.

I like the Popdudes…they sound really good. It’s the first time I’ve heard of them…it’s right up my alley. They picked a good song to cover…one that is not so known and they make it their own.

I never heard of the other song…but yea it’s so much out there and that is part of the problem for bands (good for us). You have so much of a choice…it’s hard for bands to make a mark and standout.

Glad you like their sound, Max. Well-said on SO MUCH music out there it is hard to get noticed. I have committed, at least for now lol, to keep listening to this channel and finding new (to me) tunes. So far my spotify channel picks from the last 3 weeks are 30 songs.

CB gives me different ones like today…older though. For new ones I go to a few sites and pick up on some.
There is just too much competetion for every kind of music out there.

I love the video. They seem to have channeled pop music of the 70s in a way that it reminds you of something you can’t quite put your finger on. (K)
