False Spring

Cloudless blue’s sun melts remaining snow piles
November witch hazel buds blooming
Hawks’ plaintive cries for spring fever
Back field fooled; sprouting new grass
Wet trail from garden hose
Empty bird feeders
Heater silent
Unzipped coat
Smiling
Cheeks

I hope it is the real thing but the way the temp feels out there today I expect snow anytime :(

This past weekend it was great…in the 60s…and by mid March it will start being warm more often.

Lucky for you!! We didn’t get much snow but the grey skies and no warmth per se is so yucky.

Yes, and the sun is shining again today. Nice change from “winter’s veil” as someone at TT called it.

  8. It’s still winter, but oh my… I wish it was spring. I’ve never seen witch hazel. Is it a bush or tree, Lisa?

I’ve only seen pictures of them in their mature state. Mine are just getting started and still pretty small. Some call them bushes some call them trees. I have them planted so they will make a hedge along the fence line. Here’s a pic of one: https://greatplainsnursery.com/product/common-witchhazel/

And then the weather changes the next day, right? I loved these lines, “Hawks’ plaintive cries for spring fever
Back field fooled; sprouting new grass”

I like the idea of the weather fooling the fields. :)

My Silver Maples buds have opened… they look like flowers but they are the seed pods and early leaves. My forsythia blooms little yellow flowers anytime it gets warm – even without leaves! Flase spring indeed. It was up in the 60’s yesterday, but more rain today…

Wow, Jules, you are way ahead of us. Nothing even close to budding out. I think those witch hazel should have bloomed last November but it wasn’t cold enough. Silver maple and forsythia both blooming with leaves and blossoms, how wonderful in 60s degrees!

That said, we went to “the gardens” yesterday and I saw what looked like a flowering plum inside. Will be posting pic in near future.

All the tree branches and bushes are weighted down by overnight snow… We are supposed to get 2″ but maybe more?

I read of a blind woman who grew orchids… in her ‘greenhouse’ – I wonder if she grew Vanilla orchids?

It’s sputtering snow here right now. I can see where a blind person could feel the moisture of the orchids and excel at growing them.

We got the snow the night before last. Woke up to 4″ + from what was on the bird bath. Sun is trying to shine here but still cold. Good luck with the storm and dress warm when you’re out in it, Jules.

The snow stopped around 9am. Sun came out, but I don’t see a need to go out today :)
The sidewalks and streets remained clear too.

Don’t you just love being able to decide you don’t see a need to go out today? Having that freedom to take it easy and enjoy life is pretty danged sweet.
