People ask me “What genre is your music?” With songs in 5/4 and 7/4, chords that you’d normally find in The Real Book next to “Take Five,” and influences like Radiohead, The Police, and Steely Dan, I’m really not sure what box I fit into- I’ll leave that up to you.
My older son is a big fan of Elise Trouw, which is how she came onto my radar. Watching YouTube videos of her making her music is pretty impressive.
Elise Ashlyn Trouw (b. 4/27/99) is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer.
Elise is one of the most celebrated and trail blazing independent artists of her generation – a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer and content designer/developer who blends digital technology with acoustic instruments in new and creative musical and visual ways. She has built a massive fanbase through her self-produced YouTube videos, social media platforms and touring both as a solo looping artist and with her band.
Early Life:
Trouw was born in Newport Beach, California to Arie and Anne Trouw. Her father is from South Africa and her mother is from New York City. The family moved to San Diego when Trouw was young.
Musical Beginnings:
Elise says, “[I] was raised on The Carpenters, Green Day, and 80s New Wave; I always looked forward to rides in my mom’s car where she played her ‘mixtapes,’ whether it was on a compilation CD or an ancient iPod.”
At six, she learned to play the piano with the intent of being able to play “My Immortal” by Evanescence. At age ten, she started drum lessons with instructor Dave Blackburn in Fallbrook, California, after playing the faux drums on the video game Rock Band.
Trouw attended The Bishop’s School from 7th to 11th grade, graduating before her senior year to pursue her music career. While attending Bishop’s she was also selected to be a member of the Grammy Foundation’s Grammy Camp alumni band, allowing her to perform alongside Sam Hunt at Club Nokia (since renamed The Novo) on 2/11/16.
Discography:
Unraveling (2017)
2017–2019 Collection (2020)
Studio Live Session – Little Big Beat Studio (2020)
Scary Pockets – Best Of 2020 Cover of “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac (2021)
Losing Sleep EP (2023)
Some things to share:
Currently has over 681,000 followers on Instagram, over 942,000 followers on Facebook and over 577,000 YouTube Subscribers.
Elise is currently listed as an endorsed artist by Pearl Drums, Paiste Cymbals and Vater Percussion.

First time hearing of her here. Went to her website as well. Looks like a talent we’ll all be hearing more from in the future, Lisa. I like that song and video for See Through.

She is mesmerizing to watch. So fluid in her movements. The music is lovely and glad you enjoyed See Through. I also think it is pretty impressive she got official endorsements from 3 instrument makers.

She’s quite good. I’d like her a lot more if she didn’t use terms like ancient iPod!😂😂

Not enough rough edges or energy for me, but she seems to have a lot of talent. She could use a bit of the bombast from Evanescence–she has the voice for it. (K)

I’d almost forgotten about enjoying The Carpenters when I was a little kid. I do like Radiohead currently. She’s amazingly talented… on so many instruments and with her outstanding singing (her voice as yet another instrument). I’m going to ask one of my sons, tomorrow, if he’s heard of her. He has the most mellow playlist built up over the years.
