This is a band I found on SRR and the more I listen to the band the more I like it. They have great vocal harmonies, good guitar work, and lovely progressions in their melodies. Their discography includes their eponymous debut in 2009, On the Lam EP in 2013, Cat Got Your Tongue EP in 2014, Moving Along (album? EP?) in 2023, and Black Ops EP in 2024.

The first band I think of while listening is The Rolling Stones, then The Black Crowes. I’m including three of their songs, just to give you an idea of who they are musically. Lady Blue is the one I’m hooked on, but the others kick azz as well.

from Lions in the Streets (LITS) official website:

Rock ‘n’ Roll Survivors

For decades, the Vancouver band’s dedication to its craft made Lions in the Street obscure masters of Stonesy rockers and classic, country-rock ballads.

LITS began by signing and then walking away from a couple of big label deals—TVT (NIN, Lil Jon, Pitbull) and 604 Records (Nickelback, Carly Rae Jepson)—after recording a would-be-classic debut in a famous L.A. studio, which earned them a spot on the music industry’s blacklist.

Yet despite experiencing the worst of the of old music business—just ask them about being on the wrong end of a dinner bill with Todd Rundgren, or how an A&R guy apparently almost got fired just for going to see them play—the band endured. LITS released their On the Lam EP in 2013 on British legend Sandy Roberton’s label. Roberton ran Blue Horizon, the English label that launched the British Blues rock movement with John Mayall, Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, and Rory Gallagher.

The digital revolution has given Lions in the Street’s music a new audience.

Their most recent Black Ops EP demonstrates their trademark swing and swagger, mixed by Rick Parker (BRMC) and Mark Rains (Shooter Jennings, Rival Sons). Produced by Shawn Cole and recorded live to tape on a Neve console.

Jambase called LITS “worthy of Mick & Keith at their sticky fingered best.” The Austinist.com asked, “What are you going to tell them, please be more rock’n’roll. This is the kind of band SXSW was made for.”

Lions in the Street Biography by Mark Deming

Playing tough, swaggering ’70s-styled rock & roll influenced by the Faces and the Rolling Stones, Vancouver’s Lions in the Street are a band who’ve learned the hard way the value of doing things your own way. Lions in the Street formed in 2000 as the Years, with Chris Kinnon on lead vocals and guitar, Sean Casey on guitar, Enzo Figliuzzi on bass and vocals, and Jeff Kinnon (Chris’ brother) on drums, keyboards, and vocals. As the Years gained a local following, their sound became stronger, louder, and more in tune with the sounds of rock & roll’s more dangerous past. In 2004, the Years were spotted by a major-label A&R man who signed the band to a record deal and hooked them up with a manager based out of New York City. However, what seemed like a dream come true became something of nightmare — while the group was courted by several big-name producers, they didn’t seem to be the right fit for the music, and the label decided not to release the album the Years had been recording on their dime. After hiring a lawyer to get them out of their contract, the Years returned to Vancouver in early 2006 poorer but wiser and holed up in their basement practice space, where they worked up a batch of new songs and began committing them to tape using a battered eight-track recording deck. The band decided to mark the new era by changing their name to Lions in the Street, and their basement sessions resulted in a five-song EP, Cat Got Your Tongue, which the band opted to give away as a free download on their web site. The gambit created a powerful buzz for Lions in the Street, who responded by hitting the road hard in both Canada and the United States, earning a potent fan following and winning rave reviews for their showcase set at the 2007 South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, TX.

  2. Lions in the Street have a really cool sound. Thanks to you, I started paying attention to Spotify Release Radar early this yeas. “Lady Blue” popped up in January, and I ended up including this great song in a “catching up on new music” post.

Given Lions in the Street have been around for more than 20 years, it’s a bit mind-boggling how little music they have released. It appears that record-deal-gone-sour early in their career got them black-listed in the music industry and really screwed them up!

The good news is they evidently have become more active putting music since 2023 with a series of singles and, as I just noticed, an EP in March (only their second to date!). I guess sooner or later, we’ll see a full-length album.

Isn’t their first one a whole album? And I saw 3 EPs total since then? The info is a little patchy, but I feel for musical artists that sign contracts they probably shouldn’t have and then find out later they’ve gotten shafted :(

      1. Their web bio only notes a 2013 EP (On the Lam), but you’re right there isn’t a lot of public information on them. In any case, they appear to have ramped up releasing their music. It’s really cool to have a contemporary band with a ’70s classic rock sound.

They do have a Rolling Stones vibe, especially the country sounding stuff. Nice harmonies. (K)

It does my heart good to hear 70s rock and roll like this…it shows it’s not dying. I like the first one the best because it has that Jagger slow blues feel. This is a great find Lisa! The last band to make me feel like that was The Black Crowes…

Max, I was hoping you would like this band. At the website I think they said the ability to take their music to the digital world and bypass the rotten managers allow them to make music and get it to the listeners.

I’m online late because we now play the longer game on Friday or Sat night because by the time the grandbaby goes to sleep it’s too late to play a 3+ hour game on a weeknight. Am just now signing off to go immerse myself in the Vikings world. Goodnight, Max, and sweet dreams.
