Fitness — 19+ mile bike ride today

Getting Fit Banner 100821

Today was a beautiful day for a bike ride and I refused to be distracted by the computer because that’s how a day gets wasted.  I had a plan to ride to my favorite cafe and back and enjoy lunch at the halfway point.  It was almost unbelievable the number of flowering trees in bloom.  What also amazed me were the number of robins I saw along the pathway.  Truly a lovely thing.  Another big deal to me were seeing turtles basking on logs in the river.  The sky had mini-puffs and herringbone.  Saw a few swan nesting, one nest so close to a horrible company that has mountains of gravel, salt, and god only knows what else, that blows into the lake when the wind blows.  The city seems way more interested in shoving their heads up the azzes of the millionaires building their luxury condos and taking up lake views to care about the crap blowing into it.  OK, now this is supposed to be a positive post so I’ll leave it there.

The last pic and the video were taken in the disco restroom at the cafe.  Now is that cool or what?

It was so perfect yesterday. I’m hurting today and got a sunburn on my face and arms and hands. Sunscreen next time!

That whole place is an exercise in cool. Would love to share every bit of it.

  7. I love this time of year! Redbuds are among my favorite trees. It doesn’t hurt that they bloom just before apples and lilacs, and are joined by tulip, iris, and allium.

Steve, I’d like to ask you about these panniers for bikes. Do you have any recommendations? I had my front basket overloaded last year which is why I fell. Also, are they easy to attach to the bike?

      1. Panniers attach to a rack fastened to your bike. Some bikes have eyelets at the rear dropouts (just above the axle) for attaching panniers and/or fenders. There may be another set of eyelets on the seat stays (just above the rear brake). When I enlarge your photo enough to see, it’s too fuzzy to tell if your bike has them. (If it doesn’t, there are other options.)

Once you have a rack, panniers attach easily to the rack – often with a hook at the bottom and a pair of hooks at the top. There are, of course, multiple options for both racks and panniers. Some panniers are made more like baskets, some convert to a shoulder bag, some are bigger than others. Some are waterproof. Some are sold singly, others in pairs. If you’re carrying a little bit of light stuff, one works. For a heavier load, a pair lets you balance the weight. Most panniers fit on most racks, but check before you buy.

I would go to a local bike shop, tell them what you’re interested in, how you plan to use them, and see what they have and what’s on sale. (You might want to look online first to help clarify what’s available and what you might want.) Shops will sometimes install a rack free. (A local shop here has a huge sale every March and anything you buy is installed free at the sale.) If you’re an REI member, remember that everything there that isn’t marked down will cost you about 10% less than listed due to your rebate – but then you have to spend the rebate on other stuff next year.

Ortlieb makes excellent and expensive panniers – I’ve never spent that much so my knowledge is second hand. They are suitable for a cross-country trip and overkill to ride to the corner store. The panniers I have are by Axiom but, of course, no longer made. They have others.

          1. From other photos I’ve found, it looks like it has the appropriate eyelets to mount a rack.

So many many robins here this spring too. In fact lots of birds of all kinds. I’m taking it as a good sign. (K)
