Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Bright Elusive
A lifeline, a toy, a reason
to come,
drawn from the ether,
into being.
Clean-slated but not really;
formed by two
cracked vessels with smoke
of 10,000 things trailing.
All things are born
with a soul,
but soul’s are finicky
and chug off
if doused with pesticide.
For what did Pinocchio yearn
but for his soul?
Clambered down from
his maker’s workbench
on pilgrimage.
Where would it be?
Could it be called?
Could it return?
Would it return?
Why would one whole
think it would haunt
chaos?
Faulty premise, as one
whole was not seeking.
Years at the circus,
drowning calliopes,
spiraling vortices,
shadowy aberrations,
grainy, alluring alley
way dumpster dives
drowning, distracting.
Resignation
finds refuge.
World stilled,
bright, elusive
soul alighted,
returned;
purple, fluid,
dancing
before my eyes.
“bright elusive” is a lyric from Bob Lind’s song, Elusive Butterfly
Melissa and I are today’s hosts for dVerse’ Poetics. Today the challenge is:
Please choose one (or more) of the following and weave words into poetry:
1. Write a poem that involves pilgrimage, wandering, and/or walkabout. This can be literal, metaphorical, internal, external, a bucket list trip you would like to take someday, or one you have already taken. It could also travel to the dark side or shadow realms.
2. Take a line from one of the above poems and expand on it. Please include identifying info on the poem and poet on your post if you choose this one.
3. Write about a pilgrimage, wandering, or walkabout of someone you know, famous, infamous, or unknown is fine. The story, the experience that is shared is what matters.
4. Find or create an image and write an ekphrastic poem about pilgrimage, wandering, or walkabout to it.

Wonderful poem and food for thought from Pinocchio and fun challenge, Lisa. 😀

This is deep, Li. You take us through Pinocchio’s pilgrimage through troubled times so beautifully. ❤️
(If I am not wrong Benicio is an actor, Guillermo is the director)

As a member of “Team Pinocchio” I naturally enjoyed this chance to see him again…as well as dig deeper into his feelings. Well done, Lisa.😊

Thanks so much, Bruce. I thought del Toro did an excellent job with his take on our favorite wooden puppet.

We all inhabit that circus at times on our journeys…his was a very human quest. (K)

Sadje, I agree with you on Pinocchio. Guillermo del Toro gives him a back story that is quite poignant also. Thank you on the poem <3

The remake is darker but more meaningful. Thanks much, Max. Got in from mowing, started carrying bricks to the spot for the lighthouse, then came in and took a nap for my tired self. Just woke up and now eating a bowl of fresh cooked asparagus. Life is good!
