Attacus atlas, the Atlas moth, is a large saturniid moth endemic to the forests of Asia. The species was described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. The Atlas moth is one of the largest lepidopterans, with a wingspan measuring up to 24 cm and a wing surface area of about 160 cm². Wikipedia

At fmg earlier this week we spent some time in the tropical greenhouse.  This is where the annual butterflies event happens.  The event is over now but there are still a few flying around.  We looked in the cart/case where the chrysalises are tacked and when they emerge and are ready are released into the greenhouse to amaze and delight humans of all ages.  There were no more chrysalises to emerge; however this beauty (not alive) was on the floor of the case.  I don’t know whether it died before it ever flew or it was found out in the garden intact and laid in there for people to see.  In any case, this is a gorgeous specimen.

My other Friday Favorite is Glyn’s fault.  I pulled out the Post Pop Depression album, released in 2006, which then led to my pulling out the eponymous, “Them Crooked Vultures” released in 2009.

Them Crooked Vultures

  • Josh Homme – vocals, guitars, production

  • John Paul Jones – bass guitar, keyboards, piano, clavinet, optigan, mandolin, backing vocals, production

  • Dave Grohl – drums, percussion, backing vocals, production

I chose this song to highlight today because of JPJ’s bass.  As I mentioned to Glyn in a comment Josh and Dave got together for a benefit recently and there is talk of them making music again.  Please please please get this trio together again!!!!!!

If you don’t go ga-ga over this, you and I are on completely opposite musical wavelengths.

Can’t afford to lose my head.
Can’t afford to lose my cool.
You’ll blow them all in king dumbcum.
Can’t afford to lose my tease,
I just aim to please.
Feel like a no-tell motel painting,
Out of place or ignored.
It’s all medals and trophy’s, trophy’s and metal
And all before the race has been run.
Oh,
Take off your mask,
Is
It too much to ask??
Go on
And give it a try
Or kiss
Your ass goodbye

Autobiographical anonymous.
A cotillion of friction on my jurisdiction.
It’s a lovely disguise with the wandering eyes.
I get high,
Now you’ve got something to look up to.
Trouble’s a mangy stray dog,
Play with it once, then it follows you home.
It’s all “have nots,
Have nones,
Hey can I have some’s?”
Until I’ve had enough
Yet I’ve had none.

Oh,
Take off your mask,
Lose
It into the trash
Go on
A
nd give it a try
Or kiss
Your ass goodbye.
Suddenly it gets easy.
The sun goes down.
The long arm of important things
Disappears in her gown.
You finally drop
The knife,
Forget you ever heard
It’s such a good
Night,
Ain’t forever.
It feels so good to give up, give in
Her arms.

[jam session with echo vocals]

I know it hurts.
It hurts to be young.
Metamorphosis is pain, I know.
I said it hurts to be young.
Gotta learn every goddamn thing.
You gotta hack your way through,
And realize, it’s almost entirely lies.
But then you’ll begin to smile.
Smile for me, real.
Wide.
Then you accept what you are.
The transforming is done.
You’ve become, absorbed into, and you know.
I think I know what to do.

And now I need to get out there and mow my lawn which is quickly becoming a jungle!

That is a beautiful moth–and in such perfect condition.

That song is killer! I really like that band…I’ve listened to some of their stuff…
Also about that moth…thats almost 10 inches wingspan…that is incredible.

Max glad you like the song, the whole album is like that. I didn’t even know it was Homme singing the first time I listened to it but I instantly fell in love with his voice. Then learning JPJ was on bass and Grohl on drums. There’s no down side to this. Reminds me of when Blind Faith got together.

      Yes, that moth is ginormous!

I read not long ago that Homme was wanting a reunion…and you can’t beat their bass player!
Yes it was…I hate to say but I had to google cm to inches. We started to learn about the metric system in 1975…then it vanished.

Homme has had his fair share of travails, including fighting off and beating cancer and a decade-long custody battle with his ex. Seems like things are finally calming down for him. Probably lots of stuff to process of it through writing new music.

  3. Attacus atlas looks like some alien creature to me! :-)

I have to agree with Max “Warsaw or the First Breath You Take After You Give Up” is a quite impressive track. Them Crooked Vultures rang a bell but I couldn’t remember anything else, so I resorted to my usual pathetic tactic when that happens: search my own blog! And look what I found. Hope you don’t mind I’m including the link. In case you wonder, Dave Grohl conceded then 10-year-old Nandi Bushell from Ipswich, England beat him. I mean, damn!

Now that’s incredible! Christian thanks for finding this precious video. I wonder if Nandi is still drumming?

That song is truly remarkable. A real jazzy, bluesy, psychedelic jam! Wow, you pick some very unique songs, Lisa!

Our city’s indoor conservatory finally brought back tropical butterflies a couple of weeks ago, and they emerged this week. There hadn’t been any for many months as they were escaping through gaps in the clear vinyl roof due to the complicated construction of the place. How poignant that they live so short a life and carry such grace and beauty.

Steve, the whole album is like that. Real ear candy to me. Glad you like the sound. Good on the butterfly exhibit, but bad on non-indigenous, possibly invasive species escaping into the environment!

Yes, exactly, that’s why they had to stop importing them for a while. Glad they sorted out the problem!

Will have to check out the rest of that record.
