You chose your home well, in dappled shade, where food loves to rest from scorching sun,” said Miss Dragonfly.

Indeed. Spring was summer and summer is something beyond, heat-wise. Exposed would have meant death for my family,” said Miss Spider.

We may need to add a season,” said Miss Dragonfly.

Or join them all into one?” said Miss Spider.

The Killing Season,” said Miss Dragonfly.

For now, my babies will eat well, and I will die if winter comes this year,” said Miss Spider.

My young will survive if ponds don’t evaporate — and if spring comes next year,” said Miss Dragonfly.

Cheryl, I don’t mind web spiders but those running and jumping ones creep me out, especially in the house.

What’s with the W??? Is there a way to comment without filling in name, email, and website each and every time???

Beautiful writing, Lisa. I love the subtle humour in this. The way they adapt and care for their young is such an apt metaphor. Life will go on, some way or the other.

  12. Like others have said, there are a lot of “ifs” for nature and it’s already quite a struggle of survival.  Let’s hope… Well written story, Lisa.

So true! We suffered a drought last year, and it was borderline scary. So far so good this year. Yay for rain!

Dawn, I know. We have what they are calling a “heat dome” over us right now that is concerning. “They” say it will end, but I fear one day it just won’t :(

Things are not looking so good all round, are they. I do my bit where I can but there’s something about the noise a fly makes when it’s been caught in a web, and then the spider you never knew was there scurries out. I hate flies, but I’ve been known to rescue them rather than watch what transpires. Good story, Li.

I enjoyed the conversational tone and the idea of the insects talking to each other, although I don’t like to think about what it would mean if they really did converse that way. It could be the beginnings of a horror movie if they decided to take us down!

  20. Dear Lisa,

A lovely dialogue between mothers and an entertaining nature lesson. Frankly, the only spider I’ve had any sympathy for was Charlotte. The webs are amazing, but the eight-legged creatures give me the creeps. Good story.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

I keep seeing statements along the lines, “it isn’t the smartest or the strongest that will survive but the most adaptable.” Not sure I’m quite on board with that. It’s like let the monsters keep destroying Mother Earth and just adapt to it :( Not sure that I have a choice at this point…
