Freshwater crabs? Who knew? Thirteen-hundred known species sidle tropic and sub-tropic habitats. Unlike marine crabs, their larval stage passes inside of the egg. They hatch as juveniles, under maternal care. Endemic means risk for them.

Merril is today’s host for dVerse’ Quadrille Monday, where she wants us to write a quadrille form poem using the word crab. This also morphed into a haibun.

Yes, so many types of crabs. And there were crabs. And they first appeared in the Jurassic era.
I love the “clicking castanets.” Such a great image!

Thanks, Merril. I learned a lot about them at wiki. There aren’t many fossils of the freshwater crabs, as they adapted to freshwater not as long ago as the marine ones.

So cute! There’s so much still to be discovered about the earth and its inhabitants. (K)

Yes! It’s fascinating how the marine crabs evolved to be able to survive in fresh water. At the same time, many could go extinct soon :(

For awhile we were cleaning up the waters, but our politics has turned against it. Hard to believe that some of the staunchest environmentalists originally, way back in the middle of the 20th century, were Republicans.
