Bluejays are calling this morning.
Cicadas also sound in summer.
Cicadas call at its zenith,
jays in its wind-down.
Cicadas have no tree preference
that I know of, but jays like oak.
At my old place with its oaks,
perhaps ripening acorns
get them hungry, impatient;
yet there are no oaks here.
Whatever their reason, calling jays
remind me of home.

I love blue jays too. All of our birds are gone in my little neighborhood.

Colleen that is interesting about the birds being gone. They’re having a field day here (pun intended.) The mourning dove colony is up to a dozen members now. When I go outside or pull up in the car, they’re off in different directions.

It’s happened every year. I think the birds must leave for vacation. I see the odd dove, but otherwise, no other birds.

I like Blue Jays a lot…Cardinals also…my favorite is humming birds but I like all of them…yes even vultures…they are the clean up crew. Wonderful poem!

Max, I took a bike ride about a week ago and posted on the bike path riders group on fb where I rode. A lady commented that there was a big group of vultures roosting out in that area. I said I’m glad I didn’t see them it meant something was dead around there. She said no, they gather like that when they’re getting ready for their migration. I had no idea vultures migrated! Did you?

No I had no clue they did….I would have never guessed they migrated!
On Urban Rescue Ranch he is rehabbing vultures…they are not pretty but I have to say…they seemed very thankful for him helping them…they are not stupid.

Poor critters get no respect. Glad Urban Rescue Ranch has stepped in to help them.

The sounds of the cicadas have been strong this year.

You must live in a place that had a “double emergence” (2 17-year cycles coinciding.)

Beautiful postcard! Where do you find your postcards?

Thanks, Nolcha. I have bought a couple of variety packs through Amazon and also a few packs with work done by specific artists (Matisse and Seurat) and also one of maps, all through amazon.

The blue jays start making a racket here in August. That, and the crows in the morning on the water tower, are the true signs of the impending arrival of autumn. The closest oaks are in the park, but they like hanging out on rooftops. (K)

What a pretty postcard. How you got from that to blue jays, I’ve no clue. But I love it. And it’s funny, I was walking yesterday and the blue jays were making all sorts of noise.

Dale, not all of them are ekphrastic, and this is one example. In this variety pack of 50, probably half or more are “State” postcards, which haven’t gotten used. I may end up tossing them.

Lovely idea to share them. Ekphrastic or no!

While there are oaks in the neighborhood, not in my yare. The Jays come anyway – for the black oil sunflower seeds in the feeders. :)

I’ve got 2 small oaks and where they seeded from I don’t know. Too young to give acorns yet. I think there may be one out back. Same here for the jays and the sunflower seeds.
