POPO2024 Day 14

14 by Ernst Haeckel 1904

For sixty years A/C
was not my way.
There may have been
a few days when I would
have cranked it up each year.
Since then A/C has become
my daily summer friend. Every
day blazes eighty-five
in supposed-to-be cool
Michigan. I like fake cool,
but it’s an ice-gilt prison
that lulls me in its comfort.

It does get harder to regulate your own body temperature as you get older though. Better safe than sorry!

I think you’re right about playing it safe, but in my head it feels like “cheating” or weakening :(

  4. Yes!! Imagine living in 119 F. temperatures! That’s why I couldn’t live in Arizona. The western states are too hot now. And we have the moisture to contend with here in Michigan. I get you Lisa.

No I can’t imagine it. My cousin lives in PHX and he doesn’t go outside much. As hot and dry as it has been here, I’m amazed at how much water the dehumidifier is pulling out of the air! Another scorcher today and for the next several. We are heading down to the beach later this afternoon, when it’s cooled down some.

I feel ya! It’s pretty toasty in Southwestern Ontario right now supposed to feel like upper 80s today.

  6. I grew up in Florida, so I’m a true believer. :-D

I’ve been to FL a few times, but always in December – March. It was damnably hot then but a relief from a cold dark winter. These days we don’t get much of a winter. It’s scary really.

      1. Yes, FLA in the summer was really rough– just imagine what football practice was like in August. :-D
It’s been pretty weird, for sure — I know the planet is undergoing changes, and it’s hard not to worry about all these tropical storms.

How long did you live in FL? No, I cannot imagine football practice in August!

  7. When I saw A/C in my WordPress reader preview, I initially misread it as AC/DC – oh, well, the human mind – or perhaps it’s my brain or whatever I have in my skull! :-)

A/C. Growing up without A/C in Germany, where it can get pretty hot and in certain regions also rather humid during the summer, A/C was a very new concept for me when I first visited the U.S. in 1980 – just like soft drinks that are half stuffed with ice. Both needed some time to get used to it.

I’ve since fully embraced A/C – in fact, I wouldn’t want to miss the central air in our house during hot and humid New Jersey summers. That said, I still don’t like it when the A/C is cranked up to the point where I feel like I’m in a fridge.

When it comes to ice in soft drinks, I’ve come to tolerate it, though I still think it’s a rip off when they fill up half the beverage container with ice. It also dilutes what you’re drinking and, as such, impacts the taste.

We never had it growing up, never really needed it. When my folks got older and in poor health they started using it. I think the first (window unit) I bought was around 2008, at my old house, and it was turned on for maybe 2 or 3 days on the few hottest days in a summer. This house had a couple of old fashioned window units when I moved in in 2011 but they were rarely used. It’s only been since getting the mini-splits a few years ago it’s become a daily thing in summer. That said, I’m on a power savings program through the energy company where I don’t use it from 2p-7p. I turn it on at night when it is cooler and it keeps the house cool during the day.

About pop in ice (or vice versa :) ) my dad used to buy cases of pop from the bottling plant when we were kids. We never considered cooling/diluting it with ice. Room temp has its charms. To buying pop out in restaurants, etc. I usually keep to water if there aren’t free refills. Pop is really off of my menu anymore anyway. Arnold Palmer (aka Caddyshack) is half lemonade and half iced tea. Yum. Preferred with ice (and free refills :) )

  9. When the temp is a cool 66º but the humidity is 97%, comfortable overnight sleep is impossible without AC. Crank it up and stay cool. Lisa! ♡

It really has gotten hotter, even as I’ve become less tolerant. I never had A/C until about 15 years ago, but I consider it a necessity now. Even though it’s bad for the planet. (K)
