You caught me
just about to leap,
thirsty, or just needing
a summer bath.
Not sure how it is in your corner of the world, but here in West Michigan, the chipmunks are everywhere. They love to rest on top of things like rocks, planters, woodpiles, and this half of a bird bath*. I guess it must have something to do with them being so short and all. I love these wee creatures.
*that I bought last year (?) where the top was cracked and broke very quickly.

I also love chipmunks, but it’s too bad that it takes so many of them to make a good meal.
(Sorry; couldn’t resist. Thanks for sharing!)

Sounds like they’re pretty smart. You can see a lot more when you’re up high.

Not all that smart. I have seen more than one run over by a bicycle just ahead of me. This time of year they make up the bulk (well, numbers, maybe not bulk) of the roadkill, outnumbering the deer, raccoons, skunks, and opossums.

You cyclists go pretty fast so they probably don’t have time to get out of the way. They have plenty of time to cross when they see me coming ;) Raccoons and possums are by far the most roadkill around here, followed by deer, turkey, and geese. Maybe carrion birds or snakes are nabbing chipmunk roadkill around here. Never see dead chipmunks.

Not so much speed as that they are dumb. They will turn and run the wrong way. I was riding behind someone on a quiet, wooded path, maybe 10 mph. A chipmunk darted out, stopped, turned around and ran right under her wheel.

Poor, fluffy little things. Perhaps they slowly are evolving towards being smarter. Let’s hope.

Chipmunks are too cute!We have them here as well in central New Jersey.
Last year and the year before there were fewer of them in our patio and neighborhood – I assume due some feral cats, especially one we liked to call the warrior cat since she seemed to be pretty aggressive.
Well, looks like the warrior met an even more aggressive warrior or something else happened. The warrior cat was nowhere to be seen this year. Instead there were more chipmunks.
Unfortunately, they appear to like our pool, and I saved a few from drowning. In some cases, my help sadly came too late. Fortunately, our pool is being closed tomorrow!

Sorry to hear some drowned. Make sure you have a chipmunk life raft in your pool or something like this:

We don’t have chipmunks in Manhattan, at least I’ve never seen one. Maybe too much competition from squirrels, rats, mice, and raccoons.
I have seen them in the Bronx though. They are very cute. Growing up in Ohio they were everywhere. (K)

These little guys are so much fun to watch running around the garden, carefree and playing the afternoon away …. until one runs into the house. Suddenly it’s not that much fun anymore! It took a lot of scrambling around and a little ingenuity but we finally managed to wrangle him and get him back outside. Fortunately this happened before my back surgery otherwise he might still be holding court in our sunporch! 🐿️

They are a delight for sure. Have only had one run in, by mistake. She did a straight run in, down the hall until the corner, turned around and ran right back out. Thank goodness! Cute little chipmunk icon :)

:) The cats *love* to watch them, probably even more than they do birds.

Your little chipmunk is so cute! We don’t have them here so I’ve never seen one except in pictures and the cartoon ones Chip & Dale. :)

We were all sitting in the carport a few years back. My son’s gf threw a cheeto to one and he/she stuffed it into his/her cheek pouch. It was hilarious! They store a lot of food in those little pouches.

Awww! I’ve never seen a real chipmunk, but I would love too. What a great picture.

Robbie, it’s always a lucky occasion to get a pic of one. They are usually moving all of the time, especially when they’re aware of being watched. Sometimes they freeze, but as soon as you reach for the phone/camera, they’re gone.

Haha, that sounds like most animals and birds, except for lions. But then most of the pictures are of them sleeping.

:) Those little critters brighten my day. I’ve got a carved stone frog in my yard that they like to “ride on” while munching tidbits, but I can never manage to get a pic of them doing it.

Beautiful photograph! We used to get chipmunks in the house every now and then (before we figured out how they were getting in). The cats would get very excited and they’d chase the poor little chipmunk all over the place, until one of them caught it, and then they’d all fight over it. We would chase down the cat holding the chippie, take the cat outside, and then either pry open the cat’s jaws to free the chippie — or if that failed, hold the cat by the scruff and give it a few shakes until it lost its grip. Every time, the chippie would run away, apparently unharmed. I always wondered what kinds of stories they told their chippie friends after that…

Thank you. Blue, I love this story, especially the last sentence. Sounds like your cats were being gentle with their toy ;)

Up until recently, chipmunks were few and far between up here. I get so excited with I do finally see one and can even capture it!

They don’t seem to be that afraid of humans. Have you captured them before? Maybe they trust humans. If so, Steve may be right…

I have captured them on film. So rarely. Steve?

Oh, on film! I was thinking you were a chipmunk whisperer ;) Steve aka half-fast cycling. He seems to want to impress how stupid he thinks chipmunks are.

They are a little shy in my neighborhood; I think they find the squirrels a little intimidating.

Squirrels can be bullies. They seem to get along fine with the birds.
