When the temp is just right
and the breeze blows around
and through; when cosmos dance,
peppers, tomatoes, and apples
redden with yellowing pears
under softening lumens of light,
summer rests easy once again
after a long, good hard shine.

I’m not gonna miss this last summer much. :-O HOT

I hate to say it, but I’m already missing the heat. It’s gotten much cooler here in MI, verging on freezing a couple of mornings (frost got my tomato plants!) Is it getting cooler there now?

Yes, it has been about 72 in the daytime, about 40 at night…. almost perfect for me – I call it Honolulu weather. :-D

I love this as an ode to the passage between summer and autumn! I miss the heat a little (will be going on a bike tour tonight and the temperature will go down near freezing!) but we have had a beautiful autumn on the Canadian prairies. Most of the annuals were killed by frost the other night except a few geraniums my sweety will overwinter indoors.

I am glad the poem resonates with you. Please be careful riding when it’s that cold, both for extremities and for slipperiness on the surfaces. Your autumn sounds alot like the one here. The tomatoes and peppers got hit. Now I have a big bowl of green tomatoes. Thanks for the reminder on the new geraniums from this summer, they need to come in.

Yes, many green tomatoes prematurely plucked and in a box here waiting to slowly become red.
Thanks for your words of concern, Lisa. How kind. I’ve often ridden at 6C and above but not 0. I’ve been figuring out all day what layering to wear and what extra to take along. That said, tonight I’ll be on an e-bike so I won’t have to worry about getting too hot/sweating/getting cold from exertion. But honestly, it’s our famously horrible drivers that I (and my sweety while I’m out) worry about the most.

I’m thinking of trying fried green tomatoes with some of these. This variety (purple reign) doesn’t seem to ripen well in when picked green. Do you have any dedicated bike paths where you are? Michigan is ever expanding the miles of paved bike paths (and some other non-paved trails.)

We have a lot of protected lanes along major roads, plus paved paths, but there are many gaps in the network. The ride was fun and my clothing choices were perfect for the cold.

I love this weather and what comes with it…my Dodgers are in the World Series and it feels just right outside.

The best out of seven. Yes Dodgers and Yankees are the two teams.
Whats sad…and you might remember this name. Fernando Valenzuela passed away earlier this week so the Dodgers have a patch on their uniform for him.

Sorry to hear of his passing. What happened?

Cancer…I didn’t know if you remembered his name or not…he trancended baseball in the early eighties.

His name sounds familiar. Cancer is a 4-letter word in my book. A great stealer of good people :(
