Mowing back field perimeter style
grass shoots outward from it
making ever-shrinking corral
for field ecosystems that hold
zillions of small prey insects and
larger predators. I saw a set
of toad nesting dolls,
a quarter-sized black spider,
and a finger-sized praying mantis.
Squadrons of dragonfly usually
escort and hunt flurried escapees,
but as of yet today not a one.
I wondered if the long hot & dry
put a brake on their aquatic larvae.
As if in answer, one appeared
to convey, “No worries, mate.”

Like tiny little universes all about. At least that is what I get from this.

I think you got it right, Max. They are everywhere, tiny little universes :)

I took a chance Lisa…if you see me commenting late sometimes…it’s because I have to think about it because sometimes it can mean different things…. I’m still not good at reading the whole picture.

Just remember, each moment is a unique convergence of the 10,000 things. What you see one moment may be something totally different the next. I think you do just fine at reading the whole picture. Sometimes it doesn’t even need to be “read” just accepted for what it is.

Thanks Lisa…I do have a inferior complex about poems but I believe I’m getting better. I don’t understand either…because song lyrics give me no trouble.

You’re welcome. Maybe just think of them as songs that haven’t been set to music yet?

Yes I’ll give that a try…I did well today! But it was an easier one.

This is a wonderful examination of the universe of life in a small patch of land, its greenery made ever smaller as the mower goes around.

Thanks so much, Steve. I am blessed to live where I am and to be able to appreciate these small worlds.

Dragonflies have always been a favorite of mine. Luckily for them, my childhood butterfly net could never capture their beauty. (K)

They are like tiny, beautiful machines. They rule their universe in water or air form.

Are you saying your mowing did not bring up the usual flurry of insect life?
I do love your descriptions here.
Is that your colouring? Pretty and colourful.

No, there were plenty of “flurried escapees” but no hunters to capture them until one showed up at the very end. I can see where the wording might be ambiguous. Thanks much, Dale. Yes, mine with gel markers. Thanks again :)
