Over-tired eyes glued to work screen, my peripheral vision snags a figure floating past outside. It’s a Hopper, as evidenced by the telltale rippling blur effect of the traveler about to leave, or just roll into, now.
Twenty years ago, Richard begged me to join Corps with him.
“We can go anywhere, anytime, Lila. All they ask is that we take one assignment a month.”
Richard’s family was on Mars. Corps meant free travel to see them.
My family was here.
He stayed in touch for awhile.
Mired in the present, I still smile thinking of Richard and his flyin’ shoes.
[101 words]
I lifted “flyin’ shoes” from a Townes VanZandt song title.

Rochelle Wisoff-Fields is the host of Friday Fictioneers.

Something tells me that it is too good to be completely true. Then again, maybe her sense of adventure has been curtailed by life.
Nicely done.

The sense of yearning for change come across or else or character remains rooted in the past.

James, it could be either of those things. I’m glad she’s smiling.

Great story. I’d end it at the penultimate sentence

Thanks much, Neil. Not sure what you mean about ending it at the penultimate sentence?

I mean I’d omit the last sentence

A great song as inspiration. I think very seen some of those travelers myself out of the corner of my eye. (K)

I have to wonder if she is thinking of the past or ahead? I love anything to do with time travel…when you said anytime.

Max, that’s a good question. One day I hope to cross off everything on my TMBL.

no doubt about it, time travel is the future but long before we’re gone. :)

A lovely time traveler tale, Lisa! There are always a few regrets in life, but I think I would regret not traveling. :)

I wonder that when our Earth’s time is up if Mars, the moon or any place in our known universe will be a safe place to live.
Fun Sci-fi. The present is a place to be mired in. :)

Jules, I wonder also. If we can forget who we are on Mars, maybe she will allow us to stay. 100% agreed on your last comment. Well said <3

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Fun story of human behavior.

I saw something today called “Subservient” about A.I. and robots – it was really spooky.

Is it on netflix? I think I may have seen a trailer for it.

I seem to remember Paramount …. but it very well could be. I know Farscape was on NF . Interesting show, Muppets and all. :-)

Chris, I watched it last night, and after that I watched AfAId. Double menace! The first one bordered on porn! Yes, on Farscape, and they do a great job with the muppets! I want to throw that little creep, Rygel, out into space more often than not.

Yes, I’m always inclined toward saucier stuff, and I agree – that Rygel guy should get de-meverated. :-D

I thought it was better than AfrAId. I don’t know how any man could have resisted her! I don’t know what de-meverated is, but if it’s painful, I agree lol
