A Tall Tale
Remember Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire Cat? Few know of The Nottingham Thingamajig. Please, sit back, and I will tell the tale.
Once upon a time, Nicky and Finn decided to play hooky from Nottingham Middle School. Who wanted to sit in a classroom with too little heat, too few windows, and a bored teacher reciting indoctrinating factoids anyway?
Nicky and Finn were following Trent River, now ice-crusted, heading toward Old Fergus’ abandoned cabin, when they saw it.
Still agog, heavy thumps that rumbled the ground grew nearer.
“It’s coming back for its hat!,” yelled Finn.
OK, children, it’s time for recess.

Rochelle Wisoff-Fields is the host of Friday Fictioneers. Thanks for using my photo, Rochelle. This was taken at Frederik Meijer Gardens during Halloween’s Glow Garden October.

Hah! How many are going to want to go near the cabin now?
Thank you for a wonderful photo!

Ha ha! Hadn’t thought of that. Maybe the teacher had method to her madness? You’re very welcome, Dale.

I wondered the meaning of the photo.
All I can say is, there must be a teenage boy challenge. Who can spend a night in Fergus’s cabin.

Ha ha, James (guessing, Someone.) Dale thinks the story will keep them away, and you think it will draw them in. Probably some of both. Thanks for reading and your fun comment.

Oh dear, the poor teacher’s step must have shaken them back into reality. I love the indoctrinating factoids.

I begin to see why they interpret learning as indoctrination with factoids

I’m left wondering what excuses the students concocted as to why they should be able to enjoy their recess inside!

Violet I don’t think they did. The teacher probably said, “Kids go get your coats on.” next. I do think we sometimes had recess inside, in the gym, on bad weather days, but that was a long time ago.

What fun, Lisa! As a teacher, I really tried not to do the droning, factoid indoctrination thing. I could too easily remember my own days stuck in an uncomfortable desk chair, falling asleep to the history teacher’s drone!

Thanks for your comment, Linda. I’m sure you could see it from all sides, being a teacher.

Dear Lisa,
What an inventive teacher. She certainly engaged Nicky and Finn (love the names). :D Recess? Who needs recess? Engaging and imaginative. Thanks for a great picture.

Loved the line about being indocrinated by factoids. Lots of that these days.

That cautionary tale might scare the timid children, but it will excite wonder in the adventurous.
Cool picture. I’ve never heard of a Halloween Glow Garden.
