Mid-Winter Madness of New Music (update in list and pic added)

It started around the time I stated I wanted to hear Midnight Oil’s earlier albums and it has mushroomed into midwinter madness of buying used albums (CDs.)  Albums bought in the last month or so:

In order to rate the sellers at discogs I had to listen to each one at least once.  I have to say, my instincts were good in the choices.  Don’t think I spent a fortune on them.  I bought 8 from one seller, which gave me free shipping.  Total cost for the 8?  $3.50 per disk.  You can’t beat that.

I will say that the George Carlin 2 CD set has really brightened my days.

    I like a lot of these. I have heard Before The Flood, John Barleycorn Must Die (its been a while), and Who Came First. Alejandro Escovedo…I like everything I’ve heard by him. The first time I heard him was a few months ago from CB and I posted a couple of songs. He was also in a band called Buick MacKane…good stuff!
    You covered a lot of ground here…and yea I like George Carlin a lot. A great bunch of albums! The Neil Young one I have heard some off of but not the entire album. Great picks!

    I have all the Neil Young and U2 albums but none of the others! I have heard the Traffic album but It’s not in my house :)

      Glyn I have several Neil Youngs and all of the U2’s now (yes!) Most of Midnight Oil now. So much music to gather, so little time (and space!) My older son doesn’t even listen to CDs anymore and I don’t think he ever listened to LPs. I used to have On the Beach Neil Young album. Love the album cover on it.

  4. Wow, Lisa, you TRULY have been on an impressive shopping spree! :-)

    I’ve listened to some of Midnight Oil’s music and have covered them on my blog a couple of times, though I’ve yet to explore their albums in greater detail. I like what I’ve heard thus far.

    The one album on your list I’m very familiar with and absolutely love is Dylan’s “Before the Flood,” though there is a somewhat unhappy memory associated with it. I made the mistake to use that album to “prepare” for my first Bob Dylan concert in Germany in the late ’80s, foolishly assuming the maestro would do something similar during “my show” – only to be bitterly disappointed!

    In fact, I was so bummed about that Dylan concert I didn’t want to know anything about him for a good number of years thereafter. Obviously, I’ve since gotten over it. Not only that – I have a ticket to see the maestro again for the second time in September, together with Willie Nelson and Shery Crow – knock knock knocking on wood!

      On December 23 (my so-dubbed Midnight Oil Day you’ll hear a playlist of my favorites from the first albums. There are some danged good songs on them! I adore their guitarists. They play from the soul.

      It’s all “Before the Flood”s fault on those 8 albums. Graham mentioned it and I went to discogs and got carried away. I think I (one of my ex-bfs, actually) had that LP because I remember the album cover, but I admit to being shocked when I listened to it for the first time in so long. I’m used to hearing them sung and played in a certain way, but this is not like that. It’s also not like how The Band played on Planet Waves.

      So you were expecting that high octane energy at the live concert? Sorry you were disappointed to the point where you wouldn’t listen to him for years. I can understand it though.

      Happy your back in the Zimmy Saddle Again. Willie and Sheryl also in September, YEAH! Did you hear about Sheryl selling her Tesla and donating the $$ to NPR? What a powerful political statement!

      1. Thanks, Lisa. Yep, I’ve learned my Dylan lesson, which is not to expect anything and that if he plays some of his really famous songs, they will likely sound very different from the studio versions.

        One of the things I absolutely love about “Before the Flood” are Dylan’s vocals. And, of course, the great backing by The Band.

        I also fully realize Dylan’s voice these days couldn’t be any different from “Before the Flood.” That said, Dylan’s different vocals are an important reason why I really dig “Rough and Rowdy Ways,” the album that brought present-day Dylan back on my radar screen. I also think his most recent release “Shadow Kingdom” is great.

        I’m really looking forward to see the maestro a second time. And this time without having any expectations – and hoping for the best he will have a great night! :-)

    I was really into Midnight Oil when I first heard of them, and there are a few on your list that I want to listen to, including the Traffic album. I think you and I have chatted about that one, and it’s also come up in conversations with others so it’s on the list. That is a great deal for eight albums!

      Yes, discogs is the place to buy CDs, and albums and other formats as well. Plus it supports independent sellers.

  8. I think that’s quite a deal. Bruce Cockburn was so under-rated. Carlin was a cultural phenom.
    |And who doesn’t love Chick Corea ?

      Chris, I was pleasantly shocked by the Cockburn (that sounds nasty doesn’t it.) I was expecting Leo Kotke but was not expecting the lyrics. SO GOOD. And yes, Chick got it going on.

    I should have added I also like your picks by Traffic and Neil Young. On the latter, I love “Beautiful Bluebird” in particular. While I generally dig “electric rockin’ Neil,” oftentimes, I think he tends to be best with just an acoustic guitar and a harmonica.

      Christian, I had forgotten this NY album comes with a DVD. You know how I found out? Put the DVD in by mistake and it popped up on the VLC player. The video so far is showing old chipped paint on vehicles. Beautiful Bluebird is a sad song! I’m sure that was his beloved, winging down from heaven <3 About soft Neil vs. hard Neil, I like both sides of his music. He's given a lot of beautiful music of both kinds to the world.
