Where are the Crayons?
A distant voice on an intercom pulled me from dreams. Groggy, it took a moment to orient once I opened my eyes to pastel goldenrod walls and day-bright LEDs.
Right. The surgery.
I turned my head and vertigo slapped me around.
Slower, silly. Brain implants ain’t no joke.
I pushed the morphine button attached to my finger and faded out again…
– – –
Three weeks later…
“Miss Jones, you’re ready for your first test.”
I raised my hair to expose the port.
“Take a deep breath and close your eyes.”
The device clicked in.
OMFG! Where are the crayons?!

Violet, one day, we’ll all have them (for good or ill.)

Not for me. But crayons are always welcome. (K)

I still have a whole tote full of coloring books, crayons, markers, etc. from that year of a coloring a day.

I remember that. Just mindlessly coloring on a page is equally soothing I think.

Yes, while listening to music. Totally soothing.

Depending on how you look at it, it’s a futuristic dream or a futuristic nightmare :) Not sure if you ever saw the movie, “Total Recall”? It has a system like that in there where you can take a vacation that way.

I do think I saw it but don’t remember much of the story

Seeing the title and after reading the story, even I’m wondering – where are the crayons?!
Hope she find them:)

A scary future vision, with or without crayons.

Thanks much, Gabi. Yes. I know it sounds crazy, but I think they’ve already wirelessly “jacked in” to us. It’s limited right now, but they’ll get better at it :(

Crayons. I get a sense of mental illness and the archaic attempt to heal. I might be wrong, the electric shock treatment never worked for me.

Someone, thank you for your perspective on the story. That may be exactly what it is. She could be strapped to a gurney as an experimental research subject. I wonder who thought pulsing electricity through the brain of humans against their will was a good idea? Same with lobotomy, phrenology, and all the other eeeeeees….

James were you “Someone” in the other comment? This just may be a horror story rather than futuristic fun. I guess it is all up to the interpretation of the reader.

Yes, it came up anon since the system logged me out.

What’s been making it rough??

I got so damn sick. Nothing worse than coming home from vacation sick – sick enough to miss the whole week of work. I’ve got bronchitis and I’ve been coughing a lunt since last Tuesday night (11th Feb.)

Oh no, Dale. I think I’ve gotten sick every time I’ve flown anywhere, but not like that. Hope you are under medical care and getting what you need to get well.

Right smack-dab in the middle of the cruise. It started with a cough that just got worse and worse. By the 13th, my appetite was affected. I got an upswing the last day but we got home in the wee hours of Sunday and Monday I called the doctor. It’s a rough one, tell you what.

Yes, I remember it being up in the red/orange range somewhere. I think someone should get a medal for naming a crayon color Fuzzy Wuzzy…. it’s brilliant. :-D

I’m trying to decide is this surgery was a dumbing down or an intellectual boost.
I feel it could go either way.
