I was very fortunate to have grown up in Brazil during a time when Bossa Nova was on the streets, on the radio, on television it was everywhere. I often say that Bossa Nova is part of my DNA, because the music was so strong, and growing up during that time was fantastic. Brazil is such an incredibly musical country. — from interview at jazz.com

Eliane Elias (b. 3/19/60) is a Brazilian jazz pianist, singer, composer and arranger. She was born in São Paulo, Brazil, started studying piano when she was seven, and at age twelve she was transcribing solos from jazz musicians. She began teaching piano when she was fifteen. At seventeen, she performed with Brazilian singer-songwriter Toquinho, toured with the poet, Vinicius de Moraes and was also invited to tour with Antônio Carlos Jobim, considered the pioneer of Bossa Nova music. Elias is Brazilian of Italian, Lebanese and Spanish descent. She was married to American trumpeter Randy Brecker, with whom she has a daughter, the singer/songwriter Amanda Elias Brecker. She married Marc Johnson in 1999, who plays bass in her band and co-produces her recordings.
Official website here and she’s on tour right now in the UK and in NY in April!

New to me but Eliane is a very talented musician indeed

Great pick, especially for a Sunday. Eliane Elias who is all new to me is fun to watch. I generally like the laid back vibe of Brazilian jazz. Tiny Desk Concert is a cool NPR music program. I’ve seen a bunch of other great mini-concerts from that series.

I agree, Christian, Eliane is perfect for a Sunday. She’s one classy and talented musical diva. I agree about Tiny Desk Concerts. I’ve seen many of them also. I’ve been trying to find them for the WMM this year.

I agree with Christian, a great pick for an easy (or recovering from a busy) Sunday. Loved the lyrical style of this jazz. That’s gotta be the most crowded Tiny Desk Concert setup I’ve seen!

Glad I was able to find an artist in the Bossa Nova genre. I think I found one last year also.

She has a very sensuous voice. I don’t know a lot of jazz artists, so she’s new to me. Touring with Jobim is quite an honor–but she has the chops for it. (K)

Seems she’s been overshadowed by some of her counterparts. I have not heard of her. I have been missing out!
