I went to the library this morning to pick up the last disc of S3 of Farscape and drop off the previous disc. Donated books, etc. are along an area you pass while going in. There, calling out, was a box full of old LPs in mint condition. Most of them were classical, but of course there had to be some in there for me. These are the 4 I picked, and they costed 50c each. YES!

Electric Hair: Switched-On Hits from America’s First Tribal Love Rock Musical (1970)
Very neat artwork on the cover! Looks like they pulled some of the biggest hits and vibed them with electronica.

Chet Atkins: My Favorite Guitars (1964)
Pictured on the cover are:
Gretch “Country Gentleman” electric
Del Vecchio resonator
Juan Estruch classical

Johnny Cash: Orange Blossom Special (1964)
Cash covers 3 Bob Dylan songs on this one

Johnny Cash: Songs of Our Soil (1959)
Johnny’s 4th studio album, with the major theme of the album being death

Score! Glad you found some you like! :)

Thanks, Cheryl, I plan on it. I bet you would know some of the songs from Hair if you heard them.

‘Hair’ is a 1968 album recording of the London cast production of the musical Hair featuring Paul Nicholas, Vince Edward, Oliver Tobias, Michael Feast, Peter Straker, Annabel Leventon, Linda Kendrick, Marsha Hunt, Sonja Kristina and others. The track listing is the same as the original U.S. version I believe?

OK, thanks, Glyn. I wondered if they had a different cast in the UK. The Electronic Hair is only instrumental.

I like a lot Johnny Cash, and enjoy his Dylan covers. I am sure the Chet Atkins is fine as well. But being a person who both really likes early synth music and likes the musical “Hair”, I am sure that would be the real find for me! An aside, I saw the 50th anniversary tour of “Hair” when they played Boston. It was a lot of fun (a million times better than the stupid movie), but very dated in a most delightful way!

I just found “Electric Hair” on Youtube. There is a reason why some early electronic albums became classics while most have been forgotten… lol, still fun.

There are some parts to it. I think the worst of it is that the non-electronic instruments sound even more canned than the Moog, though in places the musicians playing them do jam a little. The arrangements are far too Easy Listening. As to the Moog sounds, they are often too “Listen to me, I’m a Moog sound!”, which is made worse by being played against the bland “normal” instrument background. Not that I’ve never used totally kitsch sounds in my electronic music,,, lol. I think you once heard my version of “The House of the Rising Sun” – some very cliched Moog style sounds.

You’re way more familiar with it than I am. Have you ever heard Radiohead’s early albums on midi? I got them years ago and every once in awhile give them a listen. To me they are soothing.

I do like a lot of Radiohead. There are some good moments to this (Electric Hair), I just feel a disconnect between the electronic part and the rhythm section part a lot of the time. Anyway, it is a fun album to have!

Trent, I actually thought of you when I saw the Switched-On aspect of the album because I know you like the early synth and are familiar with the Switched-On Bach by the Moog player. I only ever saw the Hair movie but can imagine how much better the theater production would be.

Great finds! You can’t go wrong with Chet Atkins or Johnny Cash. And I’d be interested to know what you think of Electric Hair. Great songs to work with. (K)

K, I agree with the albums. Wish I knew more about classical because there were so many of those. I’m listening to the Electric Hair right now. Like Trent said, it’s fun.

The Electronic Hair album is a new one on me but an interesting listen I would imagine. The other three are an amazing pickup Lisa.

Randy you can give the full album a listen on YouTube. It’s pleasant throughout and some parts are good.

Congrats, Lisa! While I’m not familiar with any of these specific albums, snatching four LPs for two bucks is incredible. Even if you only end up digging one of them, I feel it still was a steal! :-)
While I think I’ve heard a sufficient amount of music by Johnny Cash to come to the informed conclusion I dig the Man in Black, unfortunately, I can’t make that same claim about Chet Atkins. I’ve yet to cover the man!

Thanks, Christian, yes it was! I should have bought the whole box just on principle. You know I like Johnny’s music. I like Chet’s also. One thing I noticed in the recordings I have of him is his wisecracking, which has varying degrees of success imo.
