Women Music March 2025 – Day 29 — Lykke Li — With Special Guest Writer, Melissa Lemay

Lykke Li

I struggle with myself every day — I am a lonesome person.
I talk to my family, and I connect to some people deeply along the way,
but I am a restless soul. Singing is the most immediate relief.

wiki:

Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson, known as Lykke Li, was born in Ystad, Skåne, a county in Sweden. Her mother, Kärsti Stiege, was a photographer. Music also runs in the family: her father, Johan Zachrisson, is a member of the Swedish punk-reggae band Dag Vag. Her younger brother, Zacharias is also a musician.

Zachrisson has lived in Sweden and Portugal, and has had brief stays in Lisbon, Morocco, Nepal, and India. At the age of 19, she moved to New York for a short time, returning later to record her first album at the age of 21. She possess the vocal range of a Soprano.

In addition to her music career, Zachrisson is an actress and model. She starred alongside Ryan Gosling in the romantic drama Song to Song; she has done modeling for brands such as Levi’s, H&M, and Seven for All Mankind. She is a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

In October of 2020, she released her first Swedish-language single, entitled “BRON”, which translates to both “bridge” and “source”. Here is the video for that:

My favorite song of hers:

I like this…it’s very ethereal because of the way they put echo on her voice. Very different and I like it.

  2. I was actually blanking on the word – “ethereal” is exactly how I would characterize Li Lykke’s vocals as well.

When thinking of Sweden and music, it’s safe to assume non-Swedish audiences first think of Abba and perhaps of Roxette. I also happen to recall all-female heavy metal group Thundermother since I featured them a couple of times in my new music reviews over the past few years.

But in general, Sweden largely remains unknown when it comes to music, so it was nice to having been introduced to an artist from the country – and to hear what I believe was my first song sung in Swedish!

Thundermother is a cool name for a band. Agreed on Swedish music; I’m a total newbie to it.

Heck yes on adding them to the list. Right now I’ve got a list through 2027 but I’ll get to them at some point.

              1. You got it, Lisa. And, just in case, please feel free to remind next year. I hardly know anything about Thundermother, so it should be fun exploring them! :-)
