Women Music March 2025 – Day 30 — L.A. Witch

driver Sade Sanchez (vocals/guitar)
front seat passenger Irita Pai (bass)
back seat Ellie English (drums)

The name is a partial misnomer. Though the band hails from Los Angeles,
they do not partake in any sort of witchcraft.
Yet their ability to conjure a specific time and place
through their sound does suggest a kind of magic.

Hobo Moon Cartoons recommended L.A. Witch to me.  Thanks for the recommend! I have linked to a post by Hobo Moon Cartoons about them here. My older son loves bands with female vocalists and I plan on sharing this group with him.

I wasn’t able to find out a huge amount of info about L.A. Witch, but there are plenty of YouTube videos out there with them performing.  I like their what I’m going to call fuzzy (distorted) sound with existential lyrics that get you thinking.

wiki:

L.A. Witch is an American garage-rock trio formed in Los Angeles, California in 2011, founded by L.A. natives Sade Sanchez and Irita Pai. Sanchez formed the all female group when her then-boyfriend forbade her from playing with male musicians. Asked to come up with a name, the band chose its current name after discovering its first choice, Witch, was taken.  Drummer Ellie English replaced original drummer Crystal Nava after the latter left for New York City and didn’t return.

The band’s sound has been described as a “mix of forlorn psych folk, lethargic lo-fi blues and boozy garage rock drones steeped in moody, drugged-out surf reverb.” The group’s influences include Black Sabbath, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and seminal L.A. punk rock bands X and the Gun Club.

They are a really interesting band. They cover a lot of ground! One minute they are thrashing it out…the next they sound like a cool spaghetti western soundtrack…which I love. My favorite is the first one.

Yes they are…I love the spaghetti western and surf tones! Funny Lisa…Chris and I…the guitar player…he also talked about combining that spaghetti western sound also along with rockabilly. I’ve never played it…it should be fun.

  5. Cool! L.A. Witch certainly is an attention-grabbing name. I can’t believe Sanchez listened to her then-boyfriend not to play with male musicians and assume she dumped him long ago. That said, without that dude’s stupid intervention, we probably wouldn’t have L.A. Witch, so I guess it’s all good! :-)

Based on the three songs you highlighted, these three ladies sound intriguing. I also love their evident multi-cultural backgrounds, reinforcing none of your cultural heritage should matter in the first place. Musician have demonstrated that time and again!

Yes on the first paragraph. It’s the this-and-that of things. Zhuang Zi had a story about that in his transformative daoist text.

On the 2nd paragraph, very well said. Music making is the template humans need to follow <3

Very LA sound to me–a conglomeration of lots of 60s psychedelic music. Something about them really reminds me of the Byrds. Maybe its the guitars. I’m hearing “Eight Miles High” in my head right now. I like them. (K)
