And now, onto the last, but certainly not least for WMM 2025: Selena Gomez! Up until writing up this post, I’ve only know Selena as one of the trio of podcast detectives on the HULU series, “Only Murders in the Building.” Her character (Mabel Mora) along with Steve Martin’s (Charles Haden-Savage) and Martin Short’s (Oliver Putnam) work to solve murders that take place in their NYC apartment building. Not only does she act in the series but is a co-producer. As I began looking for info for the post, I was bowled over about what a long and illustrious career that Selena has had and she’s only in her 30’s! What’s included in today’s post is but a drop in the bucket of info on her.
wiki:
American actress, singer, producer, and businesswoman Selena Gomez (b. 7/22/92) was born in Grand Prairie, TX, to Ricardo Joel Gomez and former stage actress Mandy Teefey. She was named after Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, who died in 1995. Her father is of Mexican descent, while her mother, who was adopted, has Italian ancestry. Gomez’s paternal grandparents emigrated to TX from Monterrey, Mexico in the 1970s. Gomez has said she is “a proud third-generation American-Mexican.” Her parents divorced when she was five years old, and she remained with her mother. She has two younger half/step-sisters, Gracie Teefey and Victoria Gomez; and a half-brother, Marcus. For most of her childhood, Selena was home schooled.
Selena’s mother was 16 years old when she had her. The family had financial troubles throughout Gomez’s childhood, with her mother struggling to provide for them. At one point, she recalls that they had to search for quarters to buy gas for their car. Her mother later recalled that the two would frequently walk to their local dollar store to buy spaghetti for dinner. Selena said, “I was frustrated that my parents weren’t together, and never saw the light at the end of the tunnel where my mom was working hard to provide a better life for me. I’m terrified of what I would have become if I’d stayed [in Texas.]” She later added that her mother, “gave up everything for me, had three jobs, supported me, sacrificed her life for me.” Gomez had a close relationship with her grandparents as a child; they often took care of her and “raised her” until she found success in show business.
Gomez began her career as a child actress, appearing on the children’s television series Barney & Friends (2002–2004), and emerged as a teen idol for her leading role as Alex Russo on the Disney Channel sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place (2007–2012). She signed with Hollywood Records in 2008 and formed the band Selena Gomez & the Scene, which released three successful albums. Gomez has since released three solo studio albums that debuted atop the US Billboard 200.
Gomez has worked with charitable organizations. She advocates for mental health, and gender, racial, and LGBT equality, and has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2009. She founded the cosmetic company Rare Beauty in 2020, valued at $2 billion in 2024, and non-profit Rare Impact Fund. She has appeared in listicles such as the Time 100 (2020) and Forbes 30 Under 30 (2016 and 2020), was named Billboard’s Woman of the Year (2017), and was made a member of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Government of France (2024). She is the most-followed woman on Instagram, and among the wealthiest musicians.

Here we are, at the conclusion of Women Music March 2025. OH Hell Yeah. And I am SO ridiculously allergic. My Doctor thought it was hilarious, because he knows how I get into all kinds of stuff, but he gave me some cortico and some triclic. It should be a week or ten days before it’s resolved ( ???)

You certainly can’t avoid hearing about her but I don’t think I realized how diverse her talents are. That’s one impressive individual. Another great month Lisa, well done.

I don’t watch TV, so to me, Selena is a singer…but I did not know her story. So many mothers who fight and sacrifice to give their children a good start in life. They do not get the credit they deserve.
Another great lineup! Thanks, as always, for the month of music. (K)

Congrats on concluding another great WMM series, Lisa. The vast majority of your picks were all new to me. Believe or not, even though I’m aware of her name, this includes Selena Gomez. While it’s safe to say her music is outside my core wheelhouse and I also barely watch TV, undoubtedly, her long list of accomplishments is pretty stunning, especially given her young age of 32! One wonders what else we will see from her.

Yea it’s bad here right now…it was funny though. I left work early to beat it…I was walking to the door and it was the loudest thunder I’ve ever heard…I swear I almost hit the ground! It scared me to death. I could feel the sound inside of me.

A truly talented woman. She is the perfect anchor for the two old white guys she acts with in OMitB, and her dry wit is terrific.
Congratulations on the series! Sorry, I haven’t been able to keep up with all the posts.

Steve, I’m glad you know OMITB. It’s a hoot and yes she is. No worries on keeping up. I totally understand as it’s the same for me.

Thanks for your gracious understanding, Lisa. The series is delightful and the chemistry among the actors is incredible. Another blogger introduced me to it and that led me to get a trial of Disney+ as it wasn’t on any of the services we have.

I watched it on HULU but with all of those ads on it it can be irritating. I wish the library would get it on disc.
