Angel
I saw the angel at the garden shop and knew I wanted her in the yard. Made of concrete, I needed help loading her into the trunk of the car. Underestimating her weight and overestimating my strength, when I lifted her off of the wheelbarrow? wagon? to set on the back patio, I dropped her and she lost a wing. I bought an epoxy kit to try to fix it but still she stands, praying out toward the back field, with one broken wing.

Arborvitae
When I moved here in 2011, it was small and scraggly. After being pruned and cared for, it has grown tall and filled out. It stood vertical until a few years ago when a bad ice freeze happened. It snapped many limbs off of trees. With the arborvitae it pulled it sideways, away from the house, and it has remained that way. My plan is to screw a couple of bolts into the siding and rope it back into place. Just haven’t gotten it done yet.

What home improvement projects are on your list?

There is a walkway to a city park near my home, and the couple who own the house next to it has lots of interesting sculpture in his backyard that is fun to look at.

Arborvitae is neat, hearty and easy to maintain; it’s our favorite type of hedge. Love your imperfect angel, Lisa!

Yes it is, Nancy, and glad it’s a favorite for you.

Your angel kind of reminds of something by Frank Lloyd Wright.

He made these sculptures called “sprites,” but I looked up photos of them and they’re not quite as similar to your angel as I thought.

Neat. I can see the similarity :)

I remember when you got the angel, and the broken wing. I like it actually, that it remains this way, as it can mean even the broken or broken hearted can have hope. :)

Am I correct in remembering this Angel story? Or is this a second statue that you have overestimated/understimated?
Are arborvitae similar to cedars for hedges?
Nicely done, Missy!

Yes, you read about this angel before. Good memory :) Cedar has a soft feel to it, but arborvitae is prickly. I think both could be used for hedges as they thrive on being pruned. Thanks Dale!

Yeah, I would so dearly love to get rid of mine. I loathe them. They offer visual privacy though, so there is that. And yes, another expense for me!

Love that letter A. My recent home improvement project is taking everything out of the closets, purging and organizing. Also a job with job security.

I love your angel story…as to what we are doing, planting a lot of trees along our fence lines for privacy. We live rurally and have neighbors who are, um, a bit “messy”. Takes time to buy and plant enough trees for 2 acres!

Thanks, Donna, about the angel.
You have got your work cut out for you, but oh the forest that will shelter you! What kinds of trees are you buying?

We are planting Arborvitae for privacy along our fence ine on both the north and south side. We did part of the south with Leyland Cypress trees several years ago. We hadn’t planned on planting further along the line but I ordered the wrong tree (not returnable) so we finished the fence line with them, Emeral Green Arborvitae. We are planting the new ones, Thuja Giant Arborvitae, across about 250′ of the north fence line. We live rurally so have trashy (in the yard) neighbors. They are all nice people, just not neat. LOL!

What a great start! The angel is watching, even with a broken wing.
I’ve only lived briefly in houses since leaving my childhood homes, but they do seem to always have something that needs doing. For my apartment, I still need to work out my storage situation since I have few closets and lots of stuff. Never ending I think! (K)

Thanks, K. Question: how tall are your ceilings? Is there a way shelving can be installed, with one of those rolling step ladders (with brakes) to access them?

There are shelves in every available spot and some invented ones. I just have too much stuff, to be honest. But I just rearranged a bunch of things, got rid of some more, and that helped.

Oh, my home improvement list feels too endless to mention, but how I love your haiku! I’ll think of it as job security from now on. And your angel is really beautiful, with or without wings.

With a missing wing, the angel probably has more character :-) My home improvement list is as long as a blog post… LOL.
