Haunted
Henry’s penthouse gleamed atop the new condo building. It only took a few greased palms over posh lunches in back rooms to condemn and bulldoze homes to make way for the building’s construction.
Nobody seemed to care other than the dozen displaced residents whose families had owned those homes for generations.
Gerald, the new building’s janitor, was the cousin of Mrs. Jonas, one of the displaced owners. She and her family were temporarily staying at the mission. Gerald made copies of the master keys.
It wasn’t long before Henry and the other condo residents were sure their building was haunted.

Agreed. I simply love the idea.

I enjoyed your story and can imagine the Jonas family doing what they need to do. On a side note, I am saddened by gentrification or the wase in which rich builders can “condemn and bulldoze homes” to do what they want to do.

Thank you, Someone. I’m also saddened by it. I was in a gentrified neighborhood last weekend and was shocked at how much they are selling those homes for now.

They really ought to outlaw luxury housing. Let them live on their yachts. (K)

Just is the word I had in mind. Or maybe karma?

haha, good for Gerald! “Temporarily staying at the Mission” is an excellent way to get that point across in the context of Henry’s story. I guess it is haunted, just by the living!

Or they move out and the displaced residents can move back onto their generational home.

Dear Lisa,
Couldn’t happen to a ‘nicer’ person. Revenge is a dish best served cold and hauntingly. ;)
Nicely done.

Yes it is, James. I live my life believing in karma, but in this story, karma got helped along some.

It’s occasionally oddly satisfying to rain on someone else’s parade. There’s a kind of social justice here.

Amen, Sandra. Social justice is a fitting term here. Thank you for reading.

There is a kind of silent revenge going on here. Nicely told.

Thanks, James. There’s a fine line (if any) between justice and revenge. Maybe malicious intent separates them? I don’t think there will be malicious intent by the displaced, but then again…

Maybe Henry and co will be scared away and all the displaced can move in officially!

Great story as always, with a good ending. I just watched a reel on social media stating how insane it is that “homes” have become “real estate investments.” I couldn’t agree more.

Corporations are buying up the housing and then jacking the prices up and up and up. It’s insane.
