Redbud
There are 2 redbud trees, side by side, in the front yard. They have gorgeous profuse pink blossoms that blossom before their leaves sprout. They should be blossoming soon. They are a major first pollinator around here along with the dandelions. The trees literally hum with pollinators. It’s a favorite of large bumblebees.
Rain Chime
I bought the rain chime hoping I would hear it during a heavy rain. To date it hasn’t made a sound other than when I sprayed it with the hose. Maybe it just hasn’t rained hard enough yet? It’s still pretty.
Rhubarb
This poor rhubarb plant has been put through its paces. It started life in a tree-sized pot, moved to a couple of different places in the yard. It stayed alive but it never really thrived in the container. Last fall I decided to plant it in the ground. Actually I’m just now remembering it was on the eclipse day because I remember the sun being a strange hue shining on the grass while planting it. It gets a stalk on it every year. It freaked me out the first time. After seeing what the flower looked like, now I prune them off so the stalks will grow. I’ve only cut the rhubarb once and cooked a strawberry rhubarb pie. It was a little sour and probably would have tasted good with ice cream on it.

Rabbit
When I walked out back to take the tall oak’s picture, I walked around the corner of the building and surprised the big, fat, black and white cat that lives across the street. The neighbor lets it and his other cats run wild to kill anything they can catch. There have been very few rabbits in the yard since this cat and others have come over. Anyway, it ran when it saw me as it knows I scream and chase it away when I see it. After seeing it disappear into the tall grass across the field, I looked back, and lo and behold there was a rabbit. I bet I disrupted the cat’s hunt. Good! That’s a bunny that will live to see another day. She stayed put until I took her pic and then she moseyed along.

My rhubarb was well-established when I moved into this house 28 years ago. I have no idea how old it is. I moved four of the plants to a sunnier location a few years ago and now they are even happier. The redbud is one of my favorite trees. Lacking a space to grow one, I have to content myself with walking around the neighborhood or the arboretum to see them.

I remember my grandparents always had it, and grandma used it in pie. Nice to know they have longevity. Where I planted it is sunny but it also is where blackberry brambles are taking over. Cool on the redbuds; glad your ‘hood has some. Tell me more about your arboretum please?

It is a 1260 acre university research center. It is on the edge of a lake and includes various native plant communities (wetlands, prairies, savannas, different forest types) as well as a garden of lilacs, redbuds, and flowering crabapples that will bloom in a few weeks.

Sounds fabulous! Meijer Gardens is only 158 acres and Chicago Botanic is only 385.

The redbud is gorgeous. How I love Spring with the pink and purple blossoming trees! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a rhubarb flower – how pretty. I’m not really fan of rhubarb so I’d let it bloom to enjoy the flowers.
Sweet bunny. We have one that visits our yard often and has a little afternoon grass snack.

I think the wires the cups are attached to are too stiff. I should see if it could be modified…

The weekend was nice because the weather was finally nice enough for a long hike and a short walk or two. I so enjoy your yard! Thank you for sharing it. The redbuds are gorgeous. I’m very glad you saved the bunny!

We have SOOO many rabbits! They’re bold as brass – one was up on our front porch for some reason yesterday. Thought it owned the place, no doubt.

I know they can be a problem in some areas, like Australia (I know they were at some point.) They can also be like Peter Rabbit and nibble garden things. They’ve never bothered me here. Probably too many other things to nibble?
