Til Death
Startled awake, I listen for Mr. Coffee’s gurgle, but he’s not singing. It’s always a surprise to realize you’re dead, as our lives continue as if you are alive in the other realm. At first I thought you must be in limbo, waiting for the elevator, but it’s been a year. Grieving manuals explain how remaining spouses often have vivid dreams about their deceased partners — but it is no dream. I knew it the first morning I felt the wet hem of my nightgown.
When I ask you how we’ve been so blessed, your cryptic smile tells me nothing.

I went with a totally different scenario for the wet hem. 🤷🏻♀️
Mysterious indeed

Please, Tracey, do tell on what scenario you imagined. Part of the fun is hearing what other people see in the story.

A weird comment on continued marital relations after death. What can I say, I’m twisted?

I’m as twisted as Tracey. I thought, ‘Oi, Lisa, that’s an unusual one.’ Which it is, in any sense. And creepy. So well done. :D

LOL, nothing wrong with twisted :) I do think it is surreal. It feels like she’s trapped in a situation that at this point she seems ok with. Thanks for reading and sharing what you see in the story, Gabi.

Ghosts are folk who’re dead and don’t know it. Just hanging around like a bad smell

Neil, I don’t really think they care if they are dead or if they smell. They are together. Thanks always for reading and your flavorful comments :)

Of all of the possible surprises in our lives, you have given us the ultimate. Is waking up dead not both a surprise and a relief, after all every responsibility you had has vanished?

James, that’s a very good question. I sometimes think it’s harder for the living to have no responsibilities rather than too many.
Maybe they are not dead have gone to another dimension or altered reality, but only she is able to pass back and forth between them?
Like I commented to Neil, it doesn’t matter because they are together (at least 1/3 of the time.)

This poses the question, does death really part us? In a physical sense “Yes” spiritially and emotionally, not so much. A very thought provoking piece. Well done.

Your fiction here went so well with the mood of the photo and I liked the limbo part…. and I am still thinking about spouses, or others, who have vivide dreams of the deceased. I also enjoyed the Mr. Coffee gurgle (or lack of it) – because for so many “living” folks – that morning coffee is what starts the day
