sand shark, Meinert Park, 2013 (?)
Shark Attack
No terrestrial equivalents,
A shark’s gonna shark
Until she meets a harpoon.
On land are malicious goons
That have learned how to play
Games that ensure our demise.
They are not wise like
The finned kind that have been
Maligned and speared
To satisfy palates and fear.
Melissa is today’s host of dVerse’ Prosery. Melissa wants us to write about sharks. I missed the link-up and so will link up to Sanaa’s Open Link Night.

Thank you very much for this poem. The harvesting of sharks has definitely gone too far. I lived in South Korea for eight years and for five of those years in a seaport town where a couple of the fleets hosting there specialized in catching sharks. I don’t know if they still are involved in the fishing of sharks because South Korea has entered a treaty to limit over fishing of sharks, but it definitely was a problem back in the 1990s – 2000s.

Aaron, it’s horrible what some do to beings that we’ve been conditioned to believe are “evil.” Sharks, wolves, bats, coyotes, hyenas, to name a few. They turn into endangered species after awhile. I pray they honor the treaty.

I haven’t heard. I hope they do too, but I know some Koreans think eating shark is an aphrodisiac so rich men will ignore treaties and laws like they always do.

I forgot to comment on the photo. When I first looked at it, I thought it was like a rhinoceros horn but the second time it really looks like a shark fin. Very nice photograph.

Thanks much, Aaron. Remember that old Saturday Night Live skit, Land Shark? When I saw the driftwood it’s what came to mind.

After Jaws came out my brother and I took a jigsaw to a board and made a shark fin that we stuck into styrofoam and attached a line so we could drag it across the lake. Everyone already knew the music that automatically starts when a fin is seen in the water. Your driftwood reminded me.
A shark’s gonna shark. True, and for the most part they keep to themselves, or at least to the water. It’s those terrestrial goons you mention that you really have to watch out for.

D., that’s hilarious and precious about board fin. Thanks so much for “getting” my poem. Hope you are enjoying your Friday.

I just saw a special with a woman swimming wih great white sharks…they didn’t bother her at all. You mentioned Land Shark…I was watching the first 5 seasons….”candygram” ….awesome sketch.

They’ve been maligned, which gives carte blanche for any kind of harm to them. Makes me sick! I love the old SNL. Wish I had access to them but I just don’t have the time to watch.

Yea and Jaws didn’t help. I watch it when I can…though only the first 5 seasons….love the original cast.

Yes, Jaws for sharks, Vampire Movies for bats, a million movies for wolves. Makes me sick.
I love the original cast also. I see them now (the ones still alive anyway) and think they are OLD! What does that say for me lol

I know that Cujo made people scared of Saints…I’ve only see one bad Saint in my life…and he was raised to be that way.
I know…seeing them then and now….we have that time period stamped in our heads.

Boy does that driftwood ever look like a shark!
And yes, sharks are gonna shark and for too long have been misunderstood and treated dismally. Thankfully, education is helping somewhat.
Your poem is wonderful.

I can hardly talk when my poem references eating shark and I just remembered that here in England our fish and chip shops serve “Rock Salmon” which is really Dogfish – a small shark though very plentiful – nevertheless, catching sharks just for their fins is stupid in the extreme and eating anything because it is “believed” to be aphrodisiac is just superstitious nonsense…

Andrew, I had no idea that dogfish were sharks. Guys need to stop looking for mythical aphrodisiacs that end up killing too many innocent and often endangered animals. Just go to the pharma and buy those little blue pills for godsakes!

Powerful, Li.
Sharks are just sharks. Human “sharks” are the evil ones.
