August Ablaze
Field jabbered with color,
texture of a thousand cups;
workers transport pollen to
hives, nests, nightly rests.
Dark, juicy clusters wait
along borders, on fences;
opportunistic vines climb,
others bellicose spreaders
who exact blood tolls.
August in Michigan,
~ ~ ~ ablaze ~ ~ ~
with an unfiltered,
purposeful sun.

De is today’s host for dVerse’ Quadrille Monday. De wants us to write a 44-word poem using the word jabber.

I love blackberries… looks delicious

I picked some yesterday and ate them with yogurt, then went back out and picked this bowl. They are in the fridge, waiting.

I agree with you about the colors. It really was a random bowl I picked. They are so tasty! Was really shocked the birds hadn’t gotten to them.

yes! and you didn’t resort to making jelly of the jabber-juice. Love your images, thanks for seeking ’em out

Well… this bowl is sitting in the fridge, so I may. Jabber-juice I love the idea of it.

Yes, August is ablaze, Lisa. I can see it all around our village and beyond. I love the phrase ‘field jabbered with color’, the busy bees, and the ‘dark, juicy clusters’ – the blackberries in our garden are still yellow and red.

I enjoy the use of jabber here. I have wild blackberries too. I pick at my own risk.

Thanks, Someone. I was so careful in picking them but I had to go into the thicket a little to get a good batch and a thorn caught me just above the knee.

“Field jabbered with color”….what an inventive use of the word.
Also love the title, even though it was hard for me to not think of all our wildfires here in Canada with “August Ablaze”. 😪

Mish thanks, and I really hope there is a storm front that blankets the fires with drenching rain. I will continue that prayer. We’ve been getting smoke from the fires as a visible and sometimes invisible haze that has had me coughing and my younger son got a respiratory infection from.

I love the brushstroke of ‘jabbered’ with color – sounds like a staining technique, that ties in beautifully with your berries, so painterly. It reminds me of a wonderful woodcut of Helen Frankenthaler’s called Essence Mulberry.

Across the road from my great grandmother‘s house near Battle Creek are giant brambles of blackberries. Whenever we visit, she’d send us out with buckets. Afterwards, we’d go fishing in the small lakes just on the other side. What a great reminder of the place where my father grew up. Thank you very much.

Such pleasant memories, Aaron. Very cool your dad’s side of the family grew up in Michigan.

Yeah. They’ve been there for a really long time. My aunt says since the mid 1700s, but that’s no honor. My ancestors were really poor and for the most part worked the factories or worked on farms. That’s OK. I think Michigan is beautiful. I visit every five or six years. I still have family in Battle Creek, Warren, and Pontiac.

Nolcha, there wasn’t much to the dream. It was out behind the bard, under an overhang of leaves that I noticed a cluster. I thought ooh I didn’t think of looking for them there. And no I haven’t gone back out there to see if they are really there :)
