Lots to see in the yard, some of it things I planted and the others sprouted up on their own. Some have been identified through Pl@ntNet. Since I figured out how to do slide shows again, I’ll do it that way and add captions. Look for the arrow to the right of the photo.

nice plants Li :-) you enjoy your garden! It is nice that you have a garden to plant and tend to! Xx

Thanks much. Most of them do their own thing.

Love the gourd… again…I love the bass on this Roxy Music song…whoever mixed them did great.

Yes, I’m getting geeked about the gourds and have been doing some research about how to dry them right and what to do with them afterwards. On the video it’s not the best sound quality but I wanted a live version. I also saw a Morrissey cover out there and listened. ha! Morrissey has a great voice but he’s nothing compared to Bryan Ferry on this song. I will listen to this one again for the bass. Eno may have mixed it?

That bass comes through the sound quality though…Yes Eno mixed a lot of their earlier songs…that is why I like their earlier period…it sounded so fresh.

p.s. about the mixing, when they do live performances does someone mix it on site? or is this during the time when everything is “lip synched”?

Yes…they do the sound and make sure everyone in the hall can hear but if this was recorded off the soundboard (which is where that guy is) they then can mix it properly from the tape…if the guitar is on lets say track 2, bass on track 3 and so on…they can individually track by track.

This is excellent, Lisa! I love some of the crazy names of these plants: sneezeweed, mortgage lifter tomato. Do you eat the squash and tomatoes? My SIL is currently in a debate with the supervisor of her town regarding her evening primrose plants which the town claims are just weeds and planted too close to the street. Too much to go into here but it’s very interesting and my SIL is sticking to her guns. If it goes to court, I’ll be there to show my support.

Supposedly the guy who developed the tomato said the sales of his tomatoes paid off his mortgage. I def eat the tomatoes and hopefully will eat those tasty little squash. The skin on them are also edible, like zucchini and yellow squash.
Laws are supposed to help protect us, not give institutions a means of harassing its citizens. Disgusting they would be so petty! Glad you will support her in her fight.

The skin of just about every fruit & veggie is edible, even bananas (cooked, of course). So are the cuttings and peelings which a lot of people toss into the compost … they also happen to be the most nutritious parts. We waste so much food, it’s disgusting.
I’ll def support her; she’s right.

Just keeping you up to speed regarding this situation with my SIL. She received a certified letter stating that she will be fined $1,000/day for as long as the “weeds” remain and/or imprisonment. Can you believe this BS?? She is fighting it and is getting a petition going for the governor. I support her, however, she is a widow managing to keep her house and life afloat and certainly cannot afford the fines (or jail!).

You (or your SIL) have probably already done this, but get the media spotlight on it. Seriously, if people are aware of this BS, the entity that sent to threatening letter might reconsider. Orgs that fight for plant freedom are other groups she could turn to. ACLU might take up her cause. My heart is heavy to hear of her harassment :( When does this $1k/day go into effect?

That’s interesting that you would suggest that, Lisa. I mentioned the same thing to my SIL this morning. At the heart of the matter is the fact that the plants are exceeding the 10″ height law. She cannot dig up the plants for replanting because they grew naturally through the asphalt on the side of her driveway. Nor does she want to cut them down as she is waiting for them to go to seed; obviously, cutting them down would stop that process. She has 30 days to comply, certainly enough time to get the spotlight on this situation. Thanks, Lisa.

p.s. Nancy you could write an essay for your SIL and then post it on all social media sites, letters to the editors, etc. You post it at your blog and I will reblog it.

Yes, I could. My SIL gave me such an impassioned speech the other day, if I could get her to either write or record something similar, I could get it on my site. I’d rather it come directly from her; indigenous plants are in her wheelhouse …. much more so than mine …. and the knowledgable info should come directly from her. It’s something I certainly can suggest. As I drive/walk along the local streets, I see so many other ‘violations’ that should be addressed rather than badgering this poor woman over a few flowering plants that happen to be too tall. Thanks for your input.

Sorry to go on about it, but you could walk along and take pics of every place in violation, noting address, and asking for a sig on a petition to change this nuisance law.

My SIL is taking pix; I don’t know if she has plans for a petition, other than the one to the governor.

p.p.s. She might also look into a petition process that would protect people in her jurisdiction from plant snobbery.

A fun collection of plants! And a classic Roxy song, thanks for sharing it. Bryan Ferry is so good in the video, what a showman.
As Eno had left mid-1973, I don’t believe he was involved in the album at all. Wiki does not credit him, but says Chris Thomas produced.

I thought the guy on the synth was Eno, but the caption says it’s Eddie Jobson. I do see where the caption said he enlisted former members of Roxy on his solo albums. I trust you know what you’re talking about.

Right, Jobson was Eno’s replacement. Eno left the band over artistic differences with Ferry and I’m not aware of any collaborations since. I did find an AI-generated article that claims they were the best of friends and that Ferry sang on ‘Here Come the Warm Jets.’ Nope. Thanks, AI… not.
But yes, former band mates Thompson (who also had differences with Ferry and left later), Manzanera, and Mackay appeared on that album, and Manzanera and Eno were together for the 801 project.

Quite a variety! I think I’ll avoid the sneeze weed.
It’s so much better for ecological balance to let all these different species have their space. (K)

I agree on letting them be. There is a ton of goldenrod out here also, so you would steer clear of those also. The pollinators adore it. I’ve seen monarchs on the sulphur cosmos 2 days in a row now. Tried to get pics but they look a little blurry.

I’ve seen very few butterflies here this year sadly. There were lots during covid.

About a month ago the yard was full of monarchs, but they left as quickly as they appeared. This one was a welcome sight. I’m very sorry to hear the butterflies have been scarce in your neck of the woods.
