Monkey (and a few Ape) songs

source

This post is all Max’ fault.  Today he posted on The Beatles’ tune Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except me and My Monkey.  I immediately thought of a couple more songs with monkey in the title and thought yes, I want to make a playlist.  Thanks to Max, Jim, Liam, and Graham for their suggestions, which have been added.

Hey Hey We’re The Monkees by The Monkees

Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey  by The Beatles

Monkey by George Michael

Shock the Monkey by Peter Gabriel

Monkey Suit by Elton John (and Leon Russell)

Monkey Wrench by Foo Fighters

Monkey Man by The Rolling Stones

Tweeter and The Monkey Man by Traveling Wilburys

Monkey on My Back by Aerosmith

Monkey Gone to Heaven by The Pixies

Sleeping Monkey by Phish

Monkey and the Engineer by The Grateful Dead

Marty and Lou by Peter Mulvey

Monkey Wash Donkey Rinse by Warren Zevon

Porcelain Monkey by Warren Zevon

Leave My Monkey Alone by Warren Zevon

Absolutely Bill’s Mood by They Might Be Giants

I told younger son and his wife about the playlist and they insisted I include apes and gave me the links.

The Velvet Ape by They Might Be Giants

Apeman by The Kinks

Apeshit by The Carters

Wow that’s a great list. Dylan was at his best with the Wilburys I think. And now I’m humming the Pixies…(K)

Glad you like the list, K. I like him with his bon hommes also, but I think he was his best with The Band. Cool on The Pixies.

The Band was a good influence too. On his own, he can get too self-indulgent.

  2. The Grateful Dead played a song titled Monkey And The Engineer, which was written by Jesse Fuller.

      1. I am glad you like it, and Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia performed this song on Late Night with David Letterman on April 13, 1982. You should be able to find that video.

I found it. Talking with Letterman, with him reading from cards, seemed a little surreal. Weir creeped me out in that clip.

I humbly submit “Marty and Lou” by Peter Mulvey, not for its title but for its refrain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI5pyzTeWPs

Are you into Warren Zevon? I think he has at least three different songs with monkey in the title.
