Cupid’s Bow

Memoir. Year 1961

Meet you at Cupid’s Bow at three!,” Bobby’s fading voice said as we each rode our bikes away from each other. Bobby didn’t need to say it because it had been our routine every day without fail this summer. My family was headed back to Chicago next week. I was hoping Bobby would ask me to go steady with him before then.

When I got to the cabin, mom was packing up.

Aunt Myrtle had a stroke; we’re leaving in an hour.”

No time to say good-bye.

Next summer, Bobby was riding bikes with a cute redhead.

Teenage romance, probably not, and a whole year between, lots can happen. Thanks for reading, James.

I know :( Back in those days we didn’t have cell phones, and maybe they hadn’t even exchanged addresses.

Summer crushes are always remembered fondly, but maybe this one has a few extra bits in it.

Bobby’s span of attention seems a tad underdeveloped. But it was ever thus, with first loves. Nicely done.

  8. Dear Lisa,

Oh those summer romances that become fond memories. I’m sure her quick exit made Bobby feel stood up. Great photo. Thanks for the share.

Rochelle, yes. My first crush is still vividly remembered although unrequited. His name was Doug and “Sugar Sugar” was on the radio.
Thank you, and you are very welcome.
      Shalom,

I suspect if mobile telephones were available then, it would not have made any difference. So fleeting is young love.

James, at least her mom could have driven by Bobby’s house on the way out of town so she could tell him goodbye, leave a note, etc.

Poor Bobby, but poor her too. I’m sure there were a few tears shed over that one. Still, better to have loved and lost… maybe the abrupt ending made the memory sweeter than any other kind.

Oh, the tragedy! Of course, in today’s time, a text would have been at least a good-bye.

And yet, somehow, I think we’ve lost the real with the onset of the immediacy of cell phones and this lovely write has the poignancy one would not have otherwise. Nicely done!
