Anime Girl
Stepped from
eighties anime,
she’s topped,
pink mop’s
ridge falls to
green almonds.
Her zygomats
appled rapture.
Lipstick smile,
bulldog chin,
bobble neck
souths, slender,
to shadow valley.
She’s sheathed in
pressed purple
elastic sparkle.
Her sequins light
two matchsticks
strike blue
platform shoes.
Punam is today’s host of dVerse’ Quadrille Monday, where we write a 44-word poem using a given word. Punam has given us the prompt word sparklers, in honor of Diwali.

I can picture her. I must admit my highest platforms were only about half that height. (K)

Kerfe, I’m 5’10”, and if I wore platforms that tall, my head would be outside of the atmosphere. That said I had a pair of platforms I used to wear when I was feeling particularly sassy :) Glad you can picture Anime Girl <3

My youngest is 6 ft and loves to wear heels. (I was once 5′ 5″ but am now 5′ 3″) it does make you stand out.

Oh wow, didn’t realize she was that tall. I think my granddaughter is going to be tall. I used to be 5’10 1/2″ but now not sure. Last time I measured was 5’10” but probably less now. I think tall women often wish they were short and short women often wish they were tall, but each has its pros and cons. I’ve come to the Popeye Conclusion: Iyam what Iyam.

When she was a teenager she definitely wanted to be shorter. Her sister, your 5’7″, wanted to be taller. I think I would have been happy being a little taller. But I’m shrinking instead.

Sparkling-good verse here, Lisa! Those shoes do look like an accident waiting to happen…

Thanks, Bruce. Anime girls never fall. Maybe that’s why these beauties are now in a museum ;)

Cosplay is a big thing here even in small town Thailand. Some kids that have grown up to do this are now my colleague teachers and on certain event days they get all dressed up again. It still seems a little odd to me!

So you connect with this poem in very real way. I think it is a harmless way to have fun. Do any of them wear platform shoes like this?

Of course, they love the platform shoes (maybe not quite as big as depicted) as they are all short-asses! Haha!

I could see her at the school dance. So much spray in her hair that one sparkler would light the whole place on fire. So very cool.

Those shoes are so beautiful; if I wore them, I’d break my neck. I prefer flats, much safer – and I’m more a seventies hippy/punk kind of girl! But I love your colourful anime girl, Lisa. I especially love the phrases ‘her zygomats appled rapture’ and ‘elastic sparkle, and the lines:
Her sequins light
two matchsticks
strike blue
platform shoes’.

I hear you on the shoes. Pretty to look at, but… So happy you enjoyed the poem.

I can picture her so well, Li.
I read your above comments with Kerfe. I remember wearing platform shoes in the 1970s. Remember those long jeans that covered them? There was a girl in my dorm hall, and I thought she was tall. It turned out she just wore platform shoes all the time. Of course, everyone is tall to me because I’m only just 5 Ft. tall (maybe a bit less now).

Yes, I do remember what I think you’re talking about, bell bottoms? I remember we learned how to make aprons in home-ec. My dad wanted to encourage me, I guess, and bought me a sewing machine. Somehow other I made myself a pair of bell bottoms in a blue fabric with white design. Never wore them! I did wear jean bell bottoms over my sneakers until the bottoms were shredded. So funny about the girl in your dorm room. I’m surprised you’re just 5 foot. They say dynamite comes in small packages ;)

Yes, I’m always the shortest one in the photo. 😂

And I’m always the tallest — unless my sons or brothers are around.

Oh I remember a festival in dowtown Stockholm when there were a lot of cosplay girls… I am not sure it is as popular today, but it was back then,

Bjorn, I would love to see some “in the flesh” so to speak. They have comic-cons here and in GR sometimes but haven’t gone to any.

Those are cool platforms which I would only admire and not dare to wear! What a vivid write, you brought her alive for your readers!

Loving the anime girl, a vivid description, loving those platforms – my platforms were cherry coloured and wide toed – sat cool with the flares.
