Crafts of Living
The day she realized she couldn’t stay
began to craft a plan to get away
meticulously carried out each step
by time he realized it she had left
he cried a lot but then his rage began
he crafted ways to punish her and then
it carried on for way too many years
the letting go, the cultivating fears
until the kids were grown and she was free
The time for crafting freedom had begun
She sails upon its warming rising sun
I am the host of today’s dVerse’ Poetics Tuesday. The prompt for today is to write a poem about craft or craftspersonship or to craft something that hasn’t existed until now.
Nice poem, Lisa.

The craft of living and survival – heartbreaking so glad she found her way to calmer seas.

The way you juxtapose meticulous, craft-like planning with the lingering effects of resentment really resonates. But then the triumphal movement from captivity to liberation!!! Very nice! Thank you for this powerful poem.

2 crafting supposed to each other. Good thing she was able to craft a new life for herself.

Living is a craft that, sadly, some people never learn, floundering in situations over which they think they have no control. Meticulous planning is key, especially in the face of abuse. I cheered when I read the final lines.

Gillena, thanks much. Maybe crafting freedom is more about removing obstacles to it?

Lisa, you capture a journey from constraint to liberty balancing struggle with hope, your use of “craft” reinforces the idea that freedom is worked at, not simply given – a meaningful insight💕

This one hit hard ~ a tremendously impactful poem, Lisa. Tragically I have two close friends who “lived this.”

Helen, I think it happens more than we would like to think. Hoping your friends found their ways to freedom?

<3 Congrats on your city's soon-to-be New Mayor <3 Was up late last night and listened to his acceptance speech. When he said, "people are used to having politics done to them" it struck a chord. He's right, we're used to having politics foisted onto us, like an annual *fill in horrible test* exam with the doctor.

Thanks. It’s time to rethink politics. This is a start. When people say “the rich will leave the city” I say “good riddance”. They aren’t paying taxes anyway, and they raise the cost of living for everyone.

You’re welcome. YES on them leaving the city. Let them be the refugees, looking for someplace they will be accepted. Not around here, even though right now they are building condos on the inland lake and asking $1 million plus for them. Go away, I say. They are obstructing the lake view. I took a little drive today after dream class out by the big lake but on a road that circles an area where the only public beach on the little lake is. They’ve blocked off all public parking down there, and they have put up a sign with a bunch of rules for how to use the beach. Why is it the rich believe they own all of earth’s most beautiful landscapes and resources? FUNK DAT.

A strategic crafting for freedom, complicated only by the kids is sadly such a familiar situation, Li. And you’ve written about it with deep empathy.

Dora, you know what I’m talking about. And yes, the kids *always* suffer from the weaknesses/foibles/egoism of their parents. It’s a dilemma because if we knew then what we have learned by the very experience of mistakes, many of us would never have gotten married nor had kids, and that would be a tragedy for all of humankind. I have to believe that Deity knows what they are doing. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment.

I believe it, Li, that despite the disorder of our lives, the Divine is able to order all things ultimately for good. That hope is placed in every loving heart by a loving Deity. How grateful I am for that in this cruel and chaotic world!

Yes it is, Melissa, but I think the crafting to escape is much more difficult (if you want to live through it.)
