Bears Gone Wild

PBS black bear fact sheet

No joke, twice today I’ve read about and seen where bears are attacking people. One was at an animal show in China, which showed woefully unprepared animal trainers who were involved dealing with the attack. It’s not the first time a captive wild creature has fought back against its imprisonment.

The other one though…

In an ongoing series of invasions/attacks in a decent-sized town in Japan, bears are coming into the city looking for fruit on trees in peoples’ yards. While in town they wander in to businesses. They have also been attacking people without provocation. A blog I watch regularly, Tokyo Lens, interviewed one of the victims. He’s lucky to have gotten away with his life.

After being horrified by what I was learning about both incidents, I remembered a TV show I watched a few years back, called, “Zoo,” where animals finally turned the tables on humans.  Here’s a clip:

It’s an exciting and often frightening series and absolutely food for thought.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Yes, they had to disable to automatic doors for stores because they learned how to get in with them.

The series? Yes, it was frightening but they had some skilled people that managed to survive all of the attacks.

One of my co-workers once had us listening to a morning radio station in Alaska of all places, and on occasion the station reported bear sightings in some towns as a “courtesy” to the residents. I think that was the first time I really gave serious thought to the fact we do take a lot for granted wildlife will “stay in their lane,” Lisa!

It is sad that wild animals have fewer places to live as humans keep taking over the environment…

Thankfully here we don’t have bears or other wild animals. Totally an urbanized area. But it is quite possible that animals fight against captivity. They too are intelligent creatures

  5. There’s a zoo near my house we visit a lot in the summer. A couple of year back the bears got out. The zoo was shut and nobody was harmed. But they shot them all anyway. And we both cried when we heard.

Noooooooooooooo! I’m not a fan of zoos, period. When I learn stuff like this, it confirms my repulsion. Why did they shoot the bears? They couldn’t have tranquilized them?

      1. It’s a big famous zoo very involved with conservation. Most species there are rescues and rewild projects but it was founded by a bonkers Victorian in the 1800’s.

There was an explanation about the bears. Apparently they become dangerous once they’ve escaped as they will try and try again. And one was sick and the other two potentially spreading something or something I don’t remember. I just remember feeling so sad.

For the most part the place tries to do good these days. Like some animals are 4th – 5th generation on this site. It’s huge (600 acres) and rolls across the Chilterns in England. It’s part of ZSL which has ties to Darwin and The Rothschilds

Steve, thanks for the supplemental info. Sounds like a decent place as far as zoos go. Poor critters only wanted to be free.

Yes, she is. Do you all have bears in Australia? I should know the answer to that question.

That is terrifying! We have plenty of bears up here- but our wilderness is so vast they seldom venture into inhabited areas.

V, yes it is, for the residents of that town. Many of the people interviewed in the video are older. The old guy fought off the bear multiple times. He said as he ran away it ran quickly past him and then attacked him from the front. Unnerving! I would have to do more research to see what kind of development might be going on in the region that is taking away their habitat. Have you seen the anime Princess Mononoke? It’s all about the Gods getting pissed off at humans taking away their sacred spaces and attacking humans in retaliation. (iirc! lol)

I saw a video of a bear attacking a keeper while three men tried to help. The bear was trying to get treats from the keeper.

I think you saw the same video. Those are a small breed of bear or they were young bears not sure? Don’t keep a bear from its treats!

And has always been a terrifying thought to me that animals would turn on us. It actually talks about that in Revelation in the Bible, and what would be the very end times. In Revelation 6: 7-8 the Bible says, ” when he opened the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, come and see. So I looked and behold a pale horse. And the name of the one who sat upon it was death and Hades followed behind him. And power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with the sword, with hunger, with death, and with the beasts of the Earth.”
The idea of this happening has always frightened me.

Gia, I agree. There is something almost prehistoric about them that makes them beautiful to me. I love how they hibernate and wake up and join the world in spring. I love how they parent their babies. I’ve even seen where cams have recorded them laying in hammocks :)

      1. I agree with all of that, Lisa. Only if it wasn’t so unsafe to be close to them. 😁 *Sigh
