WMM 2026 Day 10 — Melissa McLelland

Melissa McLelland

[W]hen I started singing anything that had a hint
of the blues in it or gospel,
it just opened my voice up.  It stretched
everything out. I love those beautiful, slow,
spacious songs where I can just enjoy singing.

Melissa McClelland (b. 5/18/79) is an American-born Canadian singer-songwriter who lived in Hamilton, Ontario, in her youth and now bases her career from Toronto, Ontario. McClelland’s music is influenced by blues and Americana. A writer on CMJ’s staff blog wrote that McClelland has “a persona reminiscent of a female Tom Waits.”

She was born in Chicago, IL. She spent her youth in Burlington, Ontario, before developing her career in Toronto, Ontario. McClelland married Luke Doucet on 24 June 2006; the two have played together on numerous stages, including at the 2006 Calgary Folk Music Festival. He has produced three of her records.

Whitehorse is a Canadian folk rock band, composed of husband-and-wife duo Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. Based in Hamilton, Ontario, Doucet and McClelland were both established singer-songwriters before opting to put their solo careers on hold to work together as Whitehorse. They sound great together. Which is the part I don’t know. As individuals I know them via their past connection with Blue Rodeo. No idea they were a couple or recording as Whitehorse.

Melissa recorded with them at some point but I can’t remember the album and Luke opened for them on tour for a while. He as also worked with their guitar player Bazil Donovan on his own records.

Great choice. Whitehorse is an amazing duo. My sweety and I saw them a year or two before Covid in a small Vaudeville-style theatre in our downtown. https://mhs.mb.ca/docs/sites/walkertheatre.shtml The show was fabulous. They use tape loops to augment their sound and are very entertaining, as you will know from looking into them. The Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club is a local honky-tonk less than ten minutes from us by car, and we’ve seen many great acts there including Leaf Rapids, and our son Kieran in various musical projects, plus many more.

I’d agree with the CMJ assessment of McClelland. I love her voice and stage presence. I hadn’t heard “Scared of Each Other” before – it’s lovely. What was the first vid? It isn’t available here in Canada.

I’ve shared two songs by Whitehorse, “Mismatched Eyes (Boat Song)” and “If the Loneliness Don’t Kill Me,” a delightful spoof on country.

“Rooftop” by Melissa, from “Stranded in Suburbia” That’s a nice looking theater, very similar to one here in our town, The Frauenthal.

Ah, thanks, I don’t think I know that song. Yes, the Times is a pretty cool place. Very popular. It’s in a late 19th century building that was totally restored, and the club was expanded quite a bit.
